Parents and Teacher Contribution Towards the Study of English Language in Primary School in Nigeria
Introduction
Parents and teachers are two of the most important people who affect the learning process of individual or learners. The parents are considered as the first teacher, who taught their children about their primary knowledge. On the other hand, the teachers are considered as the second parents who look for their students and supplement additional knowledge that will be needed in the future.
Secondary language learning and acquisition is considered as one of the most important subjects to be learned by children. Particularly, English because it is considered as the global language. With this, this study will focus on analyzing the contribution and role of parents and teachers in the study of English Language in primary schools in Nigeria.
Background of the Study
Parents and teacher interaction and relationship is vital in the learning process of children. This is particularly applicable in secondary language learning and acquisition. Commonly, when the children’s learning is the subject, the focus will go to the teacher, because he or she is the one who will guide the children to undergo series of changes in their learning process. However, it is important to also focus on the connection of the teacher upon the learning of the children. According to Reggio philosophy, the parents must be considered as equals among the three protagonists in teaching and learning: child, teacher and parent. Thus, it implies clear expectations that parents will do far more than auxiliary volunteers tasks in order to support the program. The focus on the life of the classroom and the careful documentation of the dynamic learning processes at work draws parents into deeper connections (Fraser & Getswicki 2001). Good relationship between teacher and parents will help to smooth the progress of and support the learning process of students.
Research Question
The following questions will serve as the guideline for the author during the investigation process:
Aims and Objectives
The main purpose of this dissertation is to investigation the influence and contribution of the parents and teachers interaction with the English language learning and acquisition in Nigerian Primary schools. Specifically, this project aims to achieve the following objectives:
- to assess and evaluate the current status of English language teaching in Nigerian primary schools;
- to evaluate the current relationship and interaction between teachers and parents regarding the English language learning of Primary students in Nigeria;
- to identify the different programs and actions being implemented by Nigerian Primary schools in order to improve and strengthen the ties between parents and teachers; and
- to recommend different changes and actions that must be done in order to improve the relationship of teachers and parents in Nigerian primary schools.
Methodology
This project will apply both qualitative and quantitative approach in order to support the data to be gathered via two types of data gathering method. This will help in order to study and analyze the topic in in-depth manner.
Sampling
This project will target 100 parents, 50 teachers and 100 primary students. They will be selected via random sampling in order to prevent bias at the same time, ensure that the entire population will be properly selected.
Data Gathering Method
Survey questionnaire and interview will be implemented. Survey questionnaire will be disseminated through the respondents via mail and personal. 10% of each sampling group will be invited for interview.
Data Analysis
All of the gathered quantitative data will be analyzed and processed via SPSS. The researcher will use the following statistical formulae:
1. Percentage – to determine the magnitude of the responses to the questionnaire.
n
% = ——– x 100 ; n – number of responses
N N – total number of respondents
2. Weighted Mean
f1x1 + f2x2 + f3x3 + f4x4 + f5x5
x= ——————————————— ;
xt
where: f – weight given to each response
x – number of responses
xt – total number of responses
