What are Vocational Programs for School Children with Intellectual Disability?


 


Generally, children with mental disability, cerebral palsy, autism spectrum disorders, Down syndrome, fetal alcohol spectrum and fragile X-syndrome are all associated with the intellectual disability of the children. In this connection, there are special vocational programs available for them in most developed countries like United States.   The country has already taken the initiative to launch over the years the various vocational programs for these children in order to eliminate unemployment among people with mental disabilities.    Relatively, varied vocational trainings and seminars offered to these special children.  For instance, in Woods’ Community, the staff of this center are serving numerous clients in order to help them to seek new opportunities and, at the same time, to achieve their personal goals in life. This community provides various supports to people with intellectual disabilities on how the should accept life’s challenges. In this center, they are taught of building caring and vocational programs, as well as offering programs, so as to active involvement  in community activities and workshops. By doing all these activities, the children would learn how to maximize their capabilities and learn to believe in their abilities to do things independently.    More than anything else, in Woods’ Community, these children enter a world of new beginning and new relationship, foremost exciting life experiences that they can use in their future endeavors.  Additionally, in this place, they will feel secured and well guided by the vocational teaching personnel and support group   to attain their goals.   This kind of home-like residence promotes challenging learning experience and education to the children with mental disabilities. In the same way it offers diverse vocational programs of excellence.  Every day is a new hope and promises new opportunity to them.   Moreover, in this home-like vocational learning setting, the children with developmental disabilities are giving the opportunity to explore in their environment, as well as to enjoy the maximum achievement of doing things alone.  In addition to that, the great value that they impart to the mental disabled children is the respect that they can get from people with the same condition, as much as from the normal people.  And, this has been the advocacy of the Woods’ Community; their children are well taking care of, at the same time, treated with respect and dignity.

On the other hand, BCC is only among of those academic and vocational setting for children with intellectual disabilities.  The place ensures the parents, especially the children that they are in the right place for them to learn and train by their teachers to acquire skills that need for applying for jobs in the near future.  The main goal of the management   is to help the children reach their full potential in life.  Not far away from that, Imani is also a vocational school for special children that provide relentless services and care for the intellectual disabled children.  This is a Catholic affiliated boarding school that also teaches educational and vocational skills to children with physical and intellectual disabilities. In BBC, the current participants were being taught of sewing, cooking, woodworking, construction, welding and knitting or crocheting.  While in Vanderbilt Kennedy Center as well as other organizations in Vanderbilt provide a wide range of treatment, research, technical assistance, education and outreach programs for the children with intellectual disabilities. Correspondingly, in VKC Reading Clinic, the personnel provide an intensive and individualized one tutoring through assessment and instructional methods. The methods that used in VKC have proven by the research as the most effective in promoting reading, serving mainly children through middle school.  In similar to BCC, there are other vocational rehabilitation services  offered by vocational agencies such as Division of Intellectual Disability Services or (DIDS)   that promotes vocational training and  daily vocational programs and services for support employment among the  young adult students.  Likewise, the National Research Center on Learning Disabilities or (NRCLD) normally conducts research in identifying learning disabilities, as well as in formulating, implementing and recommending technical assistance to national, state and local agencies for the children.  Equally important is the Iris Center, this is funded by the United States Department of Education’s Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP), the IRIS Center develops training enhancement materials to be used by  faculty and professional development providers for  teaching  various vocational and educational programs  the special children. In view thereof, the provision of employment opportunities among the children with intellectual disabilities   provides them a wide range of teaching work skills needed to move into integrated employment. And, the possible work that they may have in the near future are mailing and packaging services, cleaning, gardening and landscaping, timberwork, metal fabrication, farming and sewing.
