Leadership in Professional Nursing Practice


Introduction


The education of a leader often does not embody the newest knowledge about supervision and management that is reflected in the concept of self-directed work teams. It also does not incorporate information about coaching skills and listening skills.


Healthy workplaces, researchers and nurse leaders believe that improvements can be realized in recruitment and retention of nurses, job satisfaction for all health care staff, and patient outcomes, including the related patient’s safety are all with connection to a leader in professional nursing practice.


The Leader


The leader in a professional nursing practice played essential role, but somehow one way or another; the leadership can be a threat and conflict for the nursing practice. The lack of leadership training or supervisory style that are primary autocratic could mean that nurses are not comfortable with self-directed work teams, cross training and the involvement of Nursing Department (2008).


The culture change requires for the clinical care members to serve as role models, teachers, and mentors for the other staff. The nurse experts can be considered as a leader as long that he or she is qualified in the screening of the board of nurses. It also requires her or him to have natural leadership skills to build care teams. The leader is expected to surrender the control over non-nursing tasks and be responsible for the clinical care ( 2008).


It appears that many of the areas where nurses have been seen as resistant to culture change because it overlaps the areas in which they have not yet achieved the common components of professional nursing practice.


Leaders of health care organization can no longer ignore the critical findings in the presence any diseases. It is the main role of the leader to take care both of the sides, the people and the medical team. Leaders need to understand their purpose and assess the environmental stress that affects the patients and staff and take action to alter unhealthy situations ( 2008).


The nurse’s role has long been regarded as stress-filled based upon the physical labor, work hours, staffing, and interpersonal relationships that are central to the work nurses do. And as a leader in a nursing practice, the hard work is doubled, the sacrifices are not valued and the time is not enough. The idea of being a leader to give his all, skills, knowledge, time; and he can be very effective in promoting the positive clinical interaction (2008).


The leader should maintain the connection between the other leaders and staff nurses, and can still perform his or her responsibility for multiple patient care areas. However, improved working conditions for nurse administrators, leader, or supervisors might make role more appealing and help correct the serious deficiency in clinical assurance.


The focused attention of a leader centers in the state of health care, patient safety issues, health professions education, and leadership for nursing practice. There are various human errors and financial burden caused by fragmentation and system failures in health care that the leader must cure with a proper solution or strategy ( 2006).


The call fort he health professional is intense. The health care organizations and groups that promoting health care, effective, client-centered, timely, efficient and equitable, emphasizing evidence-based practice, quality improvements and informatics, and preparing the nurses in any level of emergency should be in key leadership positions (2006).


Conclusion


Nursing as a practice profession requires both practice and nurse scientists to expand scientific basis for patient care. Doctoral education in nursing is designed to prepare the nurses for the highest level of leadership in practice and scientific inquiry. In addition, an advanced nursing practice includes an organizational and systems leadership component that emphasizes practice, ongoing improvement of health outcomes, and ensuring patient safety, are all essential part of being a leader.
