INSTRUCTIONS:


 


1.         This assignment, which carries 40% of the total marks for the module, is compulsory for students attending the coming University of Portsmouth Examination.


 


2.         The assessment criteria are:


(a)           Substance


(b)          Originality of work


(c)           Presentation


(d)          Use of illustrations / examples, where appropriate

 


3.         Independent research on the relevant topics is encouraged.

 


4.         Higher marks would be given to students who demonstrate an in-depth analysis of the questions.


 


5.         Candidates who simply regurgitate their answers from the course manual risk failing the assignment.


 


6.         ‘Unusual’ similarities between individual assignments, suggesting plagiarism, may result in a fail grade.


 


7.         The assignment should be about 2,500 words +10% (total).


 


8.         Pages should be clearly numbered.


 


9.         The format of the assignment should be as follows:

ASSIGNMENT QUESTION


 


 


You are acting as a consultant to a company that operates in several markets across the globe. You have been asked to present a report to the Board of Directors on the subject of how to use culture as a source of competitive advantage.


 


Suggest how the company can use the spheres of culture and their interactions to produce competitive advantage. Make specific reference to the client-company’s context and situation.


 


You may make any assumptions regarding the countries the company is operating in, its type of business, product mix, composition of workforce. State your assumptions clearly.


 


Your assignment should refer to at least one academic model which purports to explain the nature of culture and cultural difference.


 


Candidates should also attempt to complete their assignment to a high standard in terms of report presentation.
