Building a Strong Relationship between Employers and Employees

In business, employment is a contract between the employer and the employee.  The employee is a person in the service of another person under any contract or agreement of hire, whether it is through oral or written procedure, the employer still has the power to control and direct the employee in the work place.   On the other hand, the employee must contribute labor and skills to the assigned job.   In this connection, building a strong employer and employee working relationship is very crucial in one organization.  The employer must use his or her level of power over the workforce in various conditions.  The relationship between the two parties is mostly affected by three significant factors such as control, interests and motivation.  In general, the employers are expected to be responsible enough to manage and balance these three factors in handling and controlling his or her employees in order to achieve harmonious and productive working relationship with the workforce.  Additionally, the employer as well as the managers who have control in the organization has the prerogative to treat the employees with all equity and humanity.  It is very important to bear in mind that the employees are the very valuable asset in the company; therefore, they should be treated well and be compensated appropriately in accordance to the nature of their job, and based on the standard labor law of every country.

Furthermore, the major ways for the employers to find employees are through job postings in newspapers and online job posting.  Sometime, employers and job seekers meet through the help of a recruitment consultant who happens to receive a commission as soon as the job seeker will be hired.   In addition to that, workforce normally has a trade or labor unions inside the company; this employees’ organization represents the entire work force to collective bargaining with the management about their working and contractual conditions and appeals to the management. If the time comes that the employee decides to stop working in a particular company, or if the employer ends the employee’s contract or terminate the contract due to certain circumstances; this process is called “at-will employment” with included provisions such as notice periods, severance pay and security measures for the employee.

Over the years, the notion of employer and employee relationship has been changed totally by the  few labor laws  that protect the rights and well being of the employees  about regular wage, health benefits and 13th month and other bonuses, as well as the  fair practices  and just treatment with the employees  that labor law expects from the employers.   Also, today, even job applicants are being protected by different federal and state laws; as the employers do not have the right to treat their employees in any way they want.  Otherwise, employees has the right to protest,  claim disputes file litigation and seek legal assistance for damages that may cause to them.  On the other side of the coin, employer and employee relationship refer also to the effective communication between the two parties in the working environment.  Proper information dissemination must be done in order to achieve correction in poor performance among the employee, to address and settle issues due to employees’ misconduct or any other issues that affect the effective working performance of the organization.   In the same token,   building a strong employer and employee relationship needs to address issues that are affecting to applicable regulations, legislations, bargaining agreements, grievance and appeal rights, discrimination, and whistleblower protections among the employees. In the same way, it involves too the process of sustaining a positive work environment by helping one another to resolve work-related issues and problems in the work place. In business practice, certain regulated relationships between the employers and employees are based on the system of rules and policies which collective bargaining is considered the most important element in order to have a common agreement between the two parties.

Therefore, there must be a common understanding between the two parties that the entire basis of the social and economic aspects of employment, is provided by the laws which create, apply and enforce the rights and obligations of both the employers and the employees. At the same time, to be able to have a harmonious employer and employee relationship, there must be an effective means of communication in the form of regular meetings and discussions that will tackle the pay and bonuses, the changeable work schedules and environment, disputes and grievances and most importantly, the health and safety of the employees in the work place.
