The Economic Importance of the Tourism Industry in   Various Countries in the World

To begin with, tourism is the most important aspect in the development of one country.  Domestic and international tourism are considered most valuable in the growth of the economy of each country.  The social importance of tourism brings cultural tourism as well as cultural propagation.  Tourism also provides deeper understanding and broadening of different nationalities’ culture, customs and interests.   Tourism also provides an export industry in one region, meaning that the level of economic activities of one country remarkably increases through its sale of products and services to the tourists.  In the same manner, tourism    also   provides foreign exchange for the country for it provides    stable income for the country through its invisible   exports.

In this connection, in Greece, there are 17.5 million tourists who visit the country every year.  The country’s main attraction is its antiquity as well as its rich and long history.  Tourism in Greece is deeply rooted from the ancient history of the country; as a result, there is more huge number of tourists who have visited the city Athens, the capital city of Greece.  Relatively, Greece started to modernize and flourish during   1960 and 1970 as mass tourism.   Since then, construction of first class hotels and other modernized facilities have been taken place.  There were main international events took place in Greece;  the 2004 Summer Olympic Games   and the Eurovision Song Contest  in 2006 which both held in Athens.  These two main events   enhanced the tourism in the country.   Aside from that the Acropolis Museum also contributed to the increase   revenue of the tourism industry in Greece.  The tourism industry in Greece is currently run by the Greek National Tourism Organization (GNTO). The new logo of the country also attracts employment opportunities to other foreign people.  And based on the international survey, Greece is considered the favorite tourist destination of Chinese and Austrians.  (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tourism_in_Greece)

On the other hand, the air transport sector brings significant impact to the inbound tourism sector of Australia’s economy.  Inbound tourism in Australia   classified as the travel activities of people who visit and stay in Australia for leisure, business and other purposes.  Tourism industry in the country employs more than 460,000 people which contribute 4.6 percent share in the Australian economy.  The export or inbound tourism industry has been a remarkable success in Australia.  In 1972, the ATEC or ITOA was established; it was able to attract 426,402 overseas visitors.  In 1987, it even grew up to 1,785,000 visitors; and it even increased further up to 4,318,000 foreign visitors in 1997.   Eventually in 2005, tourism industry even attracted more and more foreign visitors   to the country.  As a result, Australian’s   inbound tourism industry earned .2 billion in export sector.  However, the inbound tourism in the country has also faced series of challenges following the high of the Sydney Olympics, along with the 9-11  Bali bombings; as well as the SARS epidemic.  In the event, the    number of   foreign visitors reduced in 2002 up to 2003.   Comparatively, in 2006 Australia has able to rebound in inbound tourism for about 5.5 million international visitors.  Visitor numbers of visitors are from China, New Zealand, United Kingdom, Japan and United States.

Nonetheless, China has become one of the world top international tourist destinations since 1950.  But, before   planning trip to China, all travelers are   required to have a visa before entering China.  All foreign visitors without visas   are sending back to their point of departure at their own expense.  The Chinese government has set all visa and permanent residence requirements for all foreign visitors.  More than anything else, all visitors who have plans to stay or work illegally in China would be detained in prison and subject for deportation by the Chinese government.  Currently, China strictly controls   visa application guidelines   before entering their country.  In China, there are two   kinds of travelers; first are the travelers who will stay in hotels. In applying for a visa on this, the traveler should provide already the hotel accommodation and round-trip tickets.  The second kind of traveler is the one who will stay with his or her relatives.  Evidence of “kinship” must be presented.  Failure to present   proof of degree of relationship is a cause of denying your visa application.

Meanwhile, tsunami in Japan has brought bad impact to the tourism industry of the country.   Because of the tsunami took place in Japan recently, destroyed and damaged many tourists’ attractions in the country; as well as it caused tremendous loss of properties and income among Japanese’s families.  This resulted to cancellation of many foreign travels for the country; Obviously, Japan’s tourism economy is greatly affected by the calamity that struck in the country.  There are many houses, companies, businesses, hotels, restaurants, buildings and infrastructures which were totally damaged by the tsunami.
