Understanding Violent Behavior by Prison Inmates

There are better efforts to explore violence among female inmates suggest that violence and aggression among female inmates is a substantial problem and is more prevalent than previously suspected (Campbell, 1986; McGuire, 2005). Even sexual violence, once believed to be a problem only among male inmates, appears to be an issue for female inmates as well (Easteal, 2001). Even when researchers consider incarcerated women’s experiences of violence they usually ignore issues of inmate on inmate violence and focus instead on past abuse suffered by incarcerated women or violence suffered by female inmates at the hands of male inmates and correctional officers (Martin et al., 1995; Sable et al., 1999; Stein, 1996; Treacy, 1996).

The reactive aggression can be indirectly associated with substance use through complex chain, such that high levels of reactive aggression were associated with high levels of fair justice rejection, which in turn were associated with crime cases that have predicted violent behaviors by inmates. Thus, it can be that males attend more to details of physical aggression, whereas females to details of verbal aggression. Yet, males are most concerned with the gender of the provocateur, whereas females are more attentive to the severity of the provocation, thus differentiating between verbal and physical forms of provocation, as representing different levels of attack and within each form, differentiating along continuum of severity of attack.

Aside, academic research have focused on male correctional facilities, but such aggression were also major concern for female inmates and then, it is the critical role of the correctional administrators to be always responsible for staff safety as well as the inmates within the correctional facilities and that scholars should address these issues in research and provide correctional administrators and staff the tools that are necessary in maintaining the safety of everyone into prisons. Based from the literature, such as statistics from US Department of Justice (2007), that there can be about one or two of every 100 residents was incarcerated into prison during the year 2005 as comprised more on female inmates as compared to male inmates who are likely to commit violent acts while incarcerated it can be for one, more women intends to be emotionally inclined than men when being put to prison with 6 percent (US Department of Justice, 2007) of total incarcerated population in US. There is better recognition for research to not only document visible nature and quality of violence among female inmates but as well as the seeking of aggressive points among inmates to other inmates and some misunderstanding among inmates and the staff which can be present.

Personality and lifestyle environment is a major factor for incidence and that the seeking out of explaining crime issues within the grounds of facilities. The application of Donald Black’s self-help theory as a simple yet useful model or strategy can be utilized to reduced violent behaviors among inmates who assume reactive and proactive aggression domains, one situation for instance, amiably assume such unique challenge of criminal justiceas there determination of incidence of both male and female inmates of there behavior aggression on other inmates and correctional staff. Aside, the incorporation of logisticmodel of inmate on inmate assaults were significant, whereasthat of inmate on staff was not varied as there can be no discernible relationships as found between degree of rehabilitative philosophyby administrator, ethnic breakdown of staff and the type of facility structure and inmate assaults (Campbell, 1986; McGuire, 2005). There suggest that proactive aggression was indirectly associated with violence by means of crime factors and aspects.

The structure of correctional systems are too tight most of the time wherein there is no ample execution of rules and regulations into the inmates the facility which invites reactive and proactive aggression to take place as some of the correctional heads don’t adhere to strict standards of ethics and moral codes from wherein there is lack of knowledge points on their part such as conflict resolution and management reinforcing effective criminal justice system in the society knowing the functions of the correctional system as a whole. Indeed, weak commitment to service can lead to indefinite confinement of a secured correctional facility as found within inmate’s actions from within aggressive behavior being known.
