INDUCTION TRAINING PROGRAM AND ITS EFFECT ON EMPLOYEE PERFORMANCE IN AN ORGANIZATION       Induction training is probably one of the most important parts of training in an employee’s life. This is usually done as an initial preparation training for new employees before they are deployed to their job proper, most companies do conduct induction training depending on the new employee’s position and their objective is not just simply to orient them but to help them familiarize in their job with the goal and objectives of the company, meet their co-employees to create ties, socialization and teamwork. In a deeper perspective there are companies who must need to conduct a thorough training program for new employees in order to protect their privacy, boost their moral or in order to deliver expected output coming from new employees.       There are also companies that needs to orient them in order to meet health and safety measures that is highly needed in their job, these are the companies who handle delicate products and services that they need as much as possible zero errors for their employees or it will cause a tremendous harm to their customers and to their people like hospitals, nuclear plants and laboratory. Good induction training may not be too short or too long and it should include employee’s duty and responsibility, health and safety procedure, rights and privileges, job function, standard operation procedures and many other important factors that can affect the organization performance.       Usually the immediate Supervisor will be the one to handle the training and the employees are expected to enhance their performance in the latter time after the training. Employees should take advantage of the opportunity of the training for their own benefit because this part will make or break their performance since most companies do not have much time to repeat such training. A good training program should be highly appreciated for them to grow. Induction training saves time and money on the part of the company and new employees. After the training the employees should understand their position, their job function, the usual culture of the company, what department they should belong and most of all the goals and objectives of the company and the rules and regulations provided to them in the training. The effects of the training should be usually positive if done in a proper sense.       The impact of the induction program to new employees should be efficiency in employees in their initial performance and their participation, the induction program should create a positive image in their mind and they should be motivated after the training. Team work or immediate cooperation among workers should be sought as much as possible and this are the usual possibilities expected after the training. Most companies do not necessarily expect an immediate familiarization among new employees but what they need to see is their interest to focus on their job is there.       The effect of induction training program in sensitive companies should be reduced risk potentials and productivity as we mention earlier in a delicate organizations like Chemical plants etc. the good induction training program will provide new employees with the proper knowledge to eliminate faulty decision making process while at work. In a manufacturing organization such as factories, plants and others the effect of induction training is also a reduced risk and bad production and elimination of waste materials coming from improper production from employees. In a garment factory the result of induction training from non expert workers really eliminate improper sewing of garment or irregular use of materials that goes into trash while a bad induction training usually causes damages from using materials that is not applicable, therefore the employees should be highly oriented in the work and job responsibility.       In the case of Management induction of new employees they will usually submit to authority and they will know their limitation since it was thoroughly oriented. Sometimes a new employees can also commit mistakes of insubordination, production damages and other errors but usually companies let them commit a valid error from new employees but not to the extent that can create harm to their property and morality or the company will be at risk. In this case the employees may need re training or transfer of department, worst they should be replaced or removed in their position.       In the sales organization the focus of the induction training is familiarization of products and services they need to sell to their customers, the benefits of the products and how to handle or create a rooster of potential clients, deliver a good presentation, the manner of salespeople of how they dress, speak and conduct selling techniques. The induction of most salespeople is usually depending of what they sell but usually briefed and focused. The effect of the training is again usually positive, on my own personal experience the training of most salespeople are continuous and habitual in order for them to demonstrate a really positive image of the company they represent in the eyes of the customers and usually the effects of this training is a good attitude, good communication skills, personality development that they will boost their moral as a sign of acceptance and basically good sales performance coming from new employees.     Credit:ivythesis.typepad.com

HUMAN RESOURCE TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT         Employee’s Training and Development is a part of Human Resource Management (HRM) function and their objective is basically the effectiveness of their people in the workplace because they believe that they are the natural assets of the company and their effectiveness is largely perceived as a success to the company. Employees also need to be highly motivated so they work naturally and be progressive. Company and Human Resource Management may continue to monitor their people to further develop various skills needed for them to perform well like for example the Information and Communication Technology which is constantly changing. Training and Development may prepare employees to learn new things and objectives. They may also need to fill in the gap of the skills needed in the changing phases of business and international trading most basically known as globalized community or simply globalization.       Another primary reason for training and development is to appraise employees about their personality and their standing so that the company can identify potential leaders who can take part in the participation if there is a need for promotion, a highly trained employee’s is easily singled out because of their performance. Training and Development can enhance the employee’s performance to establish their own goal and be successful in the workplace; they have something to look forward to so they can understand their worth and their importance to the company and basically employees may also realize their potential to grow through training and development. The harmonious relationship between employees to employer relationship can also be developed and conflicts between them can also be prevented.       There are also times that employees training are important to prepare them for company’s growth and expansion opportunities. Company will realize that they need to grow by adding new branches or offices that is why training and development of people prepared them as they expand. Training and development may also vary according to the needs of the company but basically it can fall in the following categories; Job satisfaction and increase in production can be expected, the ability to adopt new learning attitude of employees through research and innovation, eliminating various types of problems including employees misconduct, absenteeism, morality and their confidence is uplifted. it can also reduce certain types of future problem and risk.         There are also times that training and development do not come in time or this process is not always effective that may even hinder their growth potentials. For instance pocketbell paging company has trained hundreds of employees in handling customer service during the 1980’s to 1990’s that they have been doing well for a decades and they have continued to develop them to become the best people but they have not considered the changing role of technology that sooner they have been replaced with the cell phone phenomenon. What happened to their business and to their employees? Most of them have gone out because they have not diversified earlier in such business and they have not prepared their employees through changes.       What error they have made is simply the training and development may not be adequate in the present times. The changing phase of economy, politics, society and technology including legal and environmental issues are very important in business these are almost always the best determinants to forecast the future trends. Typewriter, Camera, Computers, landline phone and other businesses are continuously changing that is why businesses and their people also need to change as well as the training and development needed to adopt to such culture and existence. Companies must always be observant to predict such marketing trends.       Training and Development have both benefited the employees for their personal and economic growth as well as the business and their objectives are both met if they have provided the most significant part. This means that employees can individually increased their knowledge that they can use in their life even outside of the company, the skills that they have mastered is a lifelong talent that has been inculcated in their mind they can even decide to harness the advantages they have learned from the company and most importantly employees are open to various opportunities including promotion, increase of salary and wages business opportunities etc.       On the other hand the company themselves can gain the real benefit in training and development through increase in their production output and basically gain more customers and sales through their effort to train their people. Another benefit to the company of training and development of employees is that they can be prepared in the competition just like a good salesman who knows the benefit of their products and services who can present their company to their customers most likely to gain the confidence of many customers and therefore an advantage in their revenue. Thesis Statement HUMAN RESOURCE TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT IN THE TOURISM SECTOR IN LIBYA               Tourism in Libya is still a new venture but is constantly in progress. Every year, 130,000 travelers visit Libya. The country gets most of the tourists because of its Greek and Roman ruins and Sahara Desert landscapes.             Libya has a number of hotels randomly located in the country, particularly in Tripoli, Libya’s capital. According to a news article, Libya is seeking to develop its tourism sector primarily through attracting increased levels of foreign direct investment or (FDI);  Libya’s government has high hopes in the future, that tourism will become the second largest industry.             Libya is currently increasing its investment to tourism to attract more tourists. One of Libya’s big firms invested 1.2 billion dollars in the construction of tourist’s complexes near the Egyptian border.             In line with this goal, this study would like to contribute on finding ways to improve the tourism industry in Libya by looking into the Human Resource aspect of its tourism.             This study is interested in the Human Resource Training and Development of the tourism sector of Libya. This study will conduct in depth research inside the tourism department to be able to actually observe the training and development programs implemented to its human resource. This study may give out questionnaires to visitors who visits the Tourism Department to be able to gauge their satisfaction on the people who assisted them in the tourism department.             The questionnaires will be standardized in order to get uniform answers. HRM Models

It is has been a cliché that the people are the most important resource in business. Effective use of people makes seems to be one of the primary assets of a business aside from its financial, technological and physical resources therefore it has to be managed effectively and strategically. Defining Human Resource Management, HRM, it is a range of management activities which aim to achieve organizational objectives through effective use of employees (Ozbilgin, 2006).             Human resource was first coined by Peter Drucker with his book The Practice of Management. After that, theoretical development of HRM emerged, accompanied by the development of different HRM models in several schools of management in the USA and the UK. These models are currently applied to different companies and businesses especially in multinational enterprises, MNEs, which needed effective HRM.             The focus of this paper is on the significance of HRM Models in the formulation of HRM strategies in MNEs in the hospitality industry. The paper analyses the different HRM approaches of organizations within the hospitality industry as well as the influence of local national environments on the effectiveness of human resource policies in hospitality MNEs. HRM Models There are two famous HRM models that exist today. One of these is the Michigan School Model which was developed by Fombrun, Tichy and Devanna (1984). This is also referred to as the hard HRM which emphasizes on treating employees as a means to achieving the organization’s strategy. Organizations that practice this model monitor investment in employee training and development to ensure to ensure it fits with the firm’s business strategy. The management’s principal reason for improving the effectiveness of HRM in this model is increasing productivity. The Michigan model also assumes that HRM will respond to the external and internal environment appropriately and a contingency approach to HRM. The Michigan model is hard HRM because it is based on strategic control, organizational structure and systems for managing people. Although it acknowledges the importance of motivating and rewarding people, it concentrates most on managing human assets to achieve strategic goals (Pinnington & Edwards, 2000).             Another HRM model was developed by a group of academics from the Harvard Business School thus it was called the Harvard Model. The Harvard Model (Beer et al, 1984) proposes that people can be dealt with within four human resource categories. The first category is the employee-influence which refers to the amount of authority, responsibility and power voluntarily delegated by and is compatible with the purpose and interests of the management. The second is the element of human resource flow, which refers to decisions on recruitment, selection promotion, exit, job security, career development, advancement and fair treatment. The reward systems is concerned with intrinsic and extrinsic rewards such as the work itself, sense of purpose, achievement and challenge, pay, bonuses, insurances and flexible working hours. The reward system should always be aligned with the overall business strategy and management philosophy. The last category is that of work systems which deals with the arrangement of people, information activities and technology (Kidombo, 2006). This is a highly prescriptive model of HRM which emphasizes a number of presumed long-term benefits of acting on stakeholder interests and situational factors, assuming that there is a set of predetermined and superior human resource policy choices (Sisson, 1994). Organizations adopting this model would ensure that employees were involved in work, have opportunities             The Michigan School Model emphasizes the strategic resource aspect of human resources and is considered to be the ‘hard’ variant of HRM (Ozbilgin, 2006) which considers employees as one of the key resources of organizations, arguing that human resource should be used effectively in order to achieve organizational goals. On the other hand, the Harvard model stresses the human element in the human resources formulation (Ozbilgin, 2006) and is considered as the ‘soft’ variant in HRM. The soft version of HRM is linked to the human relations school while the hard HRM version is seen as emerging from the strategic and business policy thoughts (Guest, 1989).             These two models are the most commonly use HRM models in businesses today aside from other models that has been theorized and formulated by some academics. Based on the definitions and explanation of each model, it can be concluded that the soft model is more advisable to be practiced by industries within the service sector while the manufacturing sector would be better to use the Michigan Model of HRM for increased production.     HRM Approach in Hospitality MNEs             While the manufacturing industry uses human for increased production and innovation in products, the labor-intensive hospitality and tourism industry especially the international companies or the multinational enterprises, MNEs, due to the fact that the industry relies on the kind of services they provide, needed an appropriate HRM model that will help the industry formulate HRM strategies that are aligned with the objectives of the company. Schuler (1992) proposes that strategic HRM is about integrating people issues with the strategic needs of the business. Therefore, business strategies provide the foundation for HRM strategies, policies and processes to be linked and a good HRM model will serve as a guideline in formulating HRM strategies.             Also, MNEs should be able to adapt to the changes in the environment that may influence the present and future survival of an organization. MNEs should have the ability to exist in different countries adopting its culture, economy, politics and the market. HRM in international context is important in the operations of MNEs (Schuler, Dowling and De Cieri, 1993). Management of human resources and HRM practices may differ from country to country. For example, organizational structures in Japan may be decentralized while in the US and UK firms may be more centralized and bureaucratic. Employees in Japan may not be very productive and efficient when the bureaucratic approach of management is implemented to them.               Emmott & Hutchinson (1998) cite the most common factors driving organizations to adopt flexible working practices as increased competitiveness both nationally and globally; new technology; changes in labour markets and employee demographics and government policies. Human resource policy of a hospitality firm in the US might differ from the HR policy in UK or in China because policy is influenced by first, the employees. Employees in the US might have different attitudes compared to employees in China. Also, corporate and HR policy is influenced by the culture especially in the hospitality industry where diversification of culture is important. Since China is a communist country, it is expected that they have different legal and political structures compared to the US. The legal structure and culture are usually the basis of HR policy of an MNE in a particular country. The parent company will incorporate its HR policy with its firm in a host country and make some necessary changes in order to adapt with the environment, making the firm more competitive within that country.              The hospitality and tourism industry’s primary asset is the services it provides. No matter how good the service a hotel, for example provides its customers, it will still rely on the manner the staff or the personnel deliver the services to the customers. Thus, as with the HRM definition above as an effective used of employees, the hospitality MNEs should formulate strategies that will enhance customer service and at the same time give emphasis on the value of the employees, providing them opportunities and making them highly committed with the organization. HRM strategies should not only be focused on the organization’s objectives and goals and competitive advantage but also with the training and education of employees making them highly competitive in the global market of MNEs.             HRM models play key roles in formulating HRM strategies; it serves as guidelines to companies on to what approach they will use with their employees. Whether a multinational company opts to have a hard or soft HRM approach, or the consolidation of both approach, the effectiveness of HRM strategies depends on the implementation of the HRM model chosen and the environment of the firm. Some countries may be best implemented with hard HRM approach while some will create effective employees with the implementation of soft HRM approach. Because of the adjustments that the newly combined workforce would have to endure, it is not surprising that at first the new management would hold so much power and decision-making authority.  The management would have the tendency to seldom consult its employees especially in making crucial decisions. As a precautionary measure, the change management would include having a perfectionist type of management to make sure that the new reporting system would remain consistently efficient. The motivation environment is often characterized through the establishment of a new structured set of rewards and punishments (Bartlett et al. 2001). However, as time goes by the workforce and the new management gets to jive with each other. Along with this is the changing of leadership type from autocratic to a democratic type. This way, the participation of all key stakeholders especially the workers will be more encouraged. If they feel something is right or wrong, or if they want to tell something important to the management, they can now be free do so without any worries. Also, a democratic leadership approach allows the management to have a feedback regarding the policies and regulations being implemented. They will immediately know if there is any tension going on between or among the stakeholders involved. HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT (HRM) EVALUATION: THE ROLE OF EMPLOYEE TRAINING PROGRAMS TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF SMEs in UK   RATIONALE   The workplace today is in a state of metamorphosis with contemporary issues such as customer satisfaction, competitive advantage, revenue and expenditures, organisational culture, technological advancement, global markets, diverse customer demands and need for effective workforce with a global mindset penetrating every aspect of the organisation. Effective workforce is crucial as it is the organisation’s primary player in accomplishing goals and delivering service. According to  and  (2004) a firm’s human resource management (HRM) practices and the kind of workforce help attain organisational competitiveness . HRM is the organisational function that enhances creativity, innovation, speed, flexibility, and efficiency of the workforce to transform them into organisational assets. Human resource management is now highly recognised as a strategic lever for the organisation in creating value.   Basically, this paper discusses in detail the research proposal that examines the significant effectiveness of training programs to SMEs in UK. The researcher attempts to identify whether the training programs employed by most SMEs in UK has significant impact to their progress. This includes discussion of its history, the current status of employee training programs, and its relationship to the business development. Specifically, this proposed research explores the perceptions of employee respondents and their view regarding the effectiveness of the said training programs.     This research proposal discusses in detail the background (literature review). Moreover, the objectives of the study and the research questions are presented. Here, vital concepts, questions and assumptions are stated. Finally, the scope and limitation of the study, overview of the methodology used, the significance of the research and definition of terms are discussed.   LITERATURE REVIEW   At the turn of the century, human resources managers will have to face new challenges. The economy and markets are different from those of a decade ago. As paradigms have changed, the characteristics affecting human resources management must also be revised such as organisational structure and functions in order to keep up to pace with relevance, latest trends and strategies. In today’s fast and technological modern world, the challenge that the Information Man faces is time’s nature of putting things in order and in place in the best and most effective way. Life has changed since the invention of the computer which dictated man to deal with things in the most efficient way possible. In the world of big international business industries where transactions and other business operations are governed by law, cultural differences and mutual trust, efficiency counts largely as a common entrepreneurial aim.  and  (1995) state that human resource management is a system that attracts, strengthens, encourages, and maintains employees who are responsible for the   successful functioning and survival of the organisation and its members . The key functions and components of Human Resource Management are manpower planning, recruitment and selection, employee motivation, employee performance evaluation, industrial relations, employee services and employee training, development and education ( 2006).   Principles of Training and Development The training function of human resource management is contemporarily termed as human resource development. It is a systematic effort to facilitate employee acquisition of present and future job-related knowledge, skills, and attitudes or assist them to correct any shortcomings in their performance ( 2002, ).  and  (1998) reports that training and development of people within an organisation refer to the advancement of skills, knowledge, and competencies, and the improved behaviour of people for both their personal and professional interests. This revolves around three areas – individual employee development, career development and performance improvement. Individual employee development follows seven laws: (1) the learning specialist must know the training program, lesson, subject, theories and skills to be taught; (2) the trainee/employee must be interested in the program; (3) the language used in the program must be understood by both learning specialist and trainee; (4) the learning specialist must fully explain the skills and information to be mastered to ensure total understanding; (5) the teaching and learning process must be interesting so that the trainee would be motivated to grasp the important information; (6) the learning process must help the trainee to comprehend new ideas in a manner that can trigger actions based on them; and (7) the results of the individual employee development must be observed in reproduction or application of skills and information that have been transferred to the trainee. Secondly, training and development revolves around the philosophical commitment to the professional advancement of people comprising the organisation through career development. Its key objective is to help employees analyse their abilities and interests to better match personnel needs for growth and development to organisational needs.   Human resource management practitioners must be able to identify the factors in maintaining a successful career development program; incorporate each these factors into the career development program; determine their general responsibilities relative to career development and their specific responsibilities to their employer and the organisation; discover methods for improving harmony between the individual and the organisation in relation to career development; and put into practice career development outcomes to the organisational setting. Finally, training and development must be aimed at performance improvement to help the organisation attain stronger organisational efficiency, greater competitive practices, and enhanced profitability. This can be done through collaborative efforts between top level management, managers, supervisors and employees in goal setting, action planning, implementation, monitoring, taking corrective action, making changes in organisational culture, technology and management styles, and continuous learning .       Performance Evaluation   HRM also facilitates the performance evaluation of staff in order for the organisation to take account of its manpower and assess its contributions to organisational goals. Specific reasons for conducting performance evaluation are: to strengthen overall organisational performance by improving the individual performance; to identify existing potential which can be utilised to either handle future higher position vacancies or other jobs for a better use of the abilities; and to provide a fair method of relating compensation to performance where there are no numerical criteria. HRM personnel are responsible for the following activities: adapting the evaluation system to the distinct organisational culture and environment; informing higher management of the principles and objectives governing the evaluation system; soliciting the participation and cooperation of appraisers and those to be appraised; assisting the management in setting the objective standards of evaluation which may include the identification of targets for achievement, introduction of self-assessment, and elimination of complexity and duplication; explaining the purposes and uses of the activity to the general staff; organising and establishing the necessary training of managers and supervisors who will conduct actual appraisals; and monitoring the entire undertaking to ensure that it flows accordingly ( 2006). Finally, HRM is concerned with employee training, development and education through a career development program and human resource development.  (2006a) states that training, development and education is done for various reasons which include improving performance when performance appraisal indicates it, setting a standard to measure the congruence of the level of improvement with performance improvement, and ensuring the proper administration of the firm’s succession planning that assists employees to be eligible for role changes. Employees undergo training, development and education to augment job satisfaction, employee morale and motivation, enhance the efficiency of organisational processes, attain financial gain, strengthen the employees’ capability to handle new technologies and procedures, encourage innovation and strategies, lessen employee turnover, improve company image, and establish risk management strategies.   OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY The primary objective of this study is to examine and determine the perception of the employee respondents regarding the effectiveness of training programs in their current SME company. To address this objective, the researcher explores the nature of training and HRM practices: its benefits and advantages to different employees. Apparently, a survey to be conducted to SME employees aimed to determine their perception towards the current training scheme in their respective company/organisation. Furthermore, an interview will be also conducted to know what are their problems and concerns regarding training programs. Finally, this research comes up with pertinent findings, and provides insightful recommendations on training programs in relation to the development of SMEs in UK.   HYPOTHESIS The study would like to test the following null hypothesis: “The level of effectiveness of employee training as part of human resource management of SME managers significantly affects the general efficiency of the organisation.”   RESEARCH QUESTIONS Generally, the purpose of this study is to conduct a study on the quality of training programs of SMEs in UK and identify the perception of the employees to quality training. This study tries to answer the following queries: 1.                  What are the employees’ perceptions regarding the training programs in their respective companies? 2.                  What are the variables that significantly affect the perception of the employees regarding training programs? 3.                  What are the advantages and disadvantages of employing a training program in SMEs in UK? 4.                  Is there any significant difference between the perception of the respondents regarding training programs and company development?   SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS The study intends to investigate the level of effectiveness of the employee training programs in most SMEs in UK. For this study, primary research and secondary research will be used. Primary research will be conducted using anonymous questionnaires that will be sent to selected employees of SMEs in UK. The questionnaires will be used to collect quantitative data and the interviews will be used to provide qualitative insights into the data collected. The data will be analysed and compiled for the correlation of the hypothesis. The data will then be presented by means of graphical representations and illustration and the difference would be highlighted. A negative correlation between the variables would suggest that the hypothesis is null, that is, the level of effectiveness of training programs significantly affects the general efficiency of the organisation.   POSSIBLE CONTENTS OF DISSERTATION The dissertation shall be divided into five chapters in order to provide clarity and coherence on the discussion of the effectives of training programs in most SMEs in UK. The first part of the dissertation will be discussing the problem uncovered by the researcher and provide ample background on the topic. The chapter shall constitute an introduction to the whole dissertation, the hypothesis, and the statement of the problem in order to present the basis of the study. Moreover, the chapter shall also have a discussion on the scope of its study as well as the significance of the study to society in general and specific effects on the management of firms. The second chapter shall be discussing the relevance of the study in the existing literature. It shall provide studies on effective employee training programs, human resource management and performance management. After the presentation of the existing related literature, the researcher shall provide a synthesis of the whole chapter in relation to the study. The third part of the study shall be discussing the methods and procedures used in the study. The chapter shall comprise of the presentation of the utilised techniques for data collection and research methodology. Similarly, it shall also contain a discussion on the used techniques in data analysis as well as the tools used to acquire the said data. The fourth chapter shall be an analysis on the tabulated data. After the said tabulation, the data are statistically treated in order to uncover the relationship of the variable involved in the study. The last chapter shall comprise of three sections, the summary of the findings, the conclusions of the study, and the recommendations. Furthermore, as we define the qualitative research it is multimethod in focus, involving an interpretative, naturalistic approach to its subject matter. This means that qualitative researchers study things in their natural settings, attempting to make sense of, or interpret phenomena in terms of the meanings people bring to them. Accordingly, qualitative researchers deploy a wide range of interconnected methods, hoping always to get a better fix on the subject matter at hand. The primary source of data will come from interviews and anonymous questionnaires from employees of SMEs in UK.  The primary data frequently gives the detailed definitions of terms and statistical units used in the study. Well-defined jobs help the employees to systematise their performance; enhance communication because the employees know what they are supposed to do and can readily share ideas and knowledge; help managers to assess an applicant’s ability to perform the specific tasks of the job; make performance evaluation easier as the definition of tasks would determine what needs to be done and if the employee is able to do it;  establish relative skills levels among the jobs for compensation decisions; serve as the basis for needs analysis in training program development; and assist organisations to identify core functions that must be maintained and the skills required to carry out these functions when confronted with issues of workforce  reduction or expansion (1994, ). Sometimes job descriptions also include the name of supervisor whom the position should report to, the qualifications required for the job, and salary range. Job evaluation – Job evaluation is a practical process of breaking down jobs into specific tasks and helping employees to judge the size of a certain job in comparison to others. The process develops the foundation for internal ranking of jobs. The two primary methods of job evaluation are whole job ranking wherein jobs are ranked against each other in their entirety; and awarding points for various areas of the job such as education, training and experience. Job evaluation entails the assessment of jobs, not the people. It is a contributory factor for problem solving as it helps determine duplication of tasks and inconsistencies between jobs and specific functions ( 2005). Performance appraisal – Performance appraisal is the process wherein supervisors evaluate an employee’s performance to identify strengths and areas of improvement. Supervisors look into specific employee actions which may include volunteering for a task or activities that are not formally part of the job; taking extra effort/responsibility; suggesting improvements; displaying initiative; demonstrating functional participation; complying with organisational procedures, policies and rules; advocating organisational objectives; demonstrating loyalty and obedience, civic virtue, and conscientiousness; helping and cooperating with others; using the firm’s resources prudently; and demonstrating flexibility and problem-solving ability ( 2003, ). Performance appraisal provides an opportunity for the employees’ efforts to be recognised and thus improve their motivation. It also offers a chance for supervisors and staff to identify and agree on training needs as well as a basis for managers to assess the effectiveness of the recruitment and hiring strategies. Most importantly, performance appraisal assists employees and supervisors to adopt a new direction for better performance (2006). Job Rotation – It is a management development practice wherein a person is moved through a series of assignments to provide him/her an opportunity to gain exposure to and experience the general operations of the firm as well as allow employees to thoroughly understand organisational processes and encourage greater job satisfaction through varied responsibilities. Job rotation among senior managers is a strategy of succession planning which is the process of developing a pool of people capable of assuming an existing job when necessary. For the lower management, job rotation answers the purposes of promotability or improvement of skills ( 2006). Job Enlargement - Job enlargement is a process of extending the scope of a particular job through additional tasks that call for the same level of responsibilities and skills. It is facilitated to prevent boredom among employees. This strategy opposes the principles of specialisation and the division of labor wherein jobs are broken down into smaller units, each of which is performed repetitively by an employee. Some motivational theories claim that boredom and alienation through the routinary and repetitive performance advanced by division of labor can cause efficiency to weaken. Accordingly, job enlargement aims to motivate employees through additional tasks that do not greatly deviate from their current responsibilities. Some examples are replacement of assembly lines with modular work wherein a worker does not repeat the same step on every product; rather he/she handles numerous tasks on a single product ( 2007;  2006). Job Enrichment - Job enrichment is a job redesign approach that expands individual jobs by adding more tasks and requiring other kinds of skills and competence to handle the additional tasks. The purpose is to fine tune the division of labor within the firm and improve organisational efficiency. Enriched jobs allow employees to realise their personal goals and evoke work behaviour congruent with the objectives of the firm. Job enrichment can correct ineffective work designs, enhance managerial control systems, abolish or lessen the need for labour, and intensify the work process ( 1986, ). Job Satisfaction – Job satisfaction reflects the conscious attitudes toward one’s job. Job satisfaction can be achieved through clear and just organisational policies; supervisors who appreciate employee efforts and outputs as well as guide ineffective performance; appropriate compensation for the job; a corporate culture that allows socialisation, camaraderie, and coordination; pleasant working conditions which include individual work areas, sufficient office supplies, ventilated office, and clean health and sanitary facilities; meaningful tasks; freedom to decide and carry out actions; and reward for loyalty and remarkable performance (, , &  1999).  and  (2004) claim that job satisfaction has been linked to critical organisational outcomes such as employee absenteeism, tardiness, intentions to turnover, actual turnover, job performance, organisational citizenship behaviour, burnout, physical and psychological well being, creativity, productivity, loyalty to company and life satisfaction (). Thus, a program designed for the continuing education of managers on new management techniques, strategies and approaches is imperative. This process involves five steps. First, the person has to assess the kinds of interests, values, skills, knowledge, and developmental needs that he possesses and the work environment that he prefers. After these things are determined, the person has to explore all options available to him. These options may range from internships, volunteer works, academic materials, or full time employment. Afterwards, there is a need to identify possible jobs that the person can capably handle, assess the desirability of these jobs, analyse alternatives, and select short term and long term options. The fourth step requires the person to prepare for hiring requirements to the chosen job.
