PRACTICAL RESOLUTION IN STUDYING TOPONYM OF COUNTRIES

Toponym is a study of geographic location of a known and partly unknown place by tracing their history to identify its previous names and cultural practices. Toponomy is not the same as Etymology which usually focused on using the origin of words. The study of toponomy has led nations to trace its roots whether it is a fact or a simple basis or a tale, in tracing the names of the location there are various considerations that must be fulfilled more than maps and recorded data it should also be consistent and valid, there should be a thorough investigation on the places by interviewing the residents or the municipal leaders and other people who may knew the history of their locations.

Toponomist may need to consult the United Nations Group of Experts on Geographical Name (UNGEGN) to authenticate the new found toponym and this will be their contribution to their government and its people. If the toponym has been authenticated and validated it will be distributed in schools and government as a part of their legacy and can be used as a basis of study to trace its culture and history. Leidner suggest investigating on Scope, Method, Evaluation and gathering of facts to its final resolution and presentation.

Tracing ones root and origin is not easy it may entail a lot of work and travelling to study such locations and its people that is why Dr. Jochen Lothar Leidner from the University of Edinburgh in 2007 suggested practical ways to establish a systematic approach to the study. He call his study the “Toponym Resolution” for the computation and tracing names of location depending on occurrence and situational approach, although he concluded that it still really hard to prove but using such approach will make it a bit easier and systematic. He then introduced a basic focus of investigation, the first and foremost needed materials should be a spatial model or map generation that is comprehensive and traceable and computer is highly reliable for tracing such map.

The precise and actual set-up is definitely untraceable or unidentified but it can give a flexible idea to the researcher to study the data and resources from the library hopefully that additional resources can be found before going to the location because of the given sources which is the map, it is the vital focus of the study and it can generate a conclusion and visualized idea in the location of what is in there before the investigation proper. Computer can also have a multi-media mapping system to enlarge the visual representation. They have also discover various methodology of a bit accuracy in system mapping and tracing by computation and generating some forms of determinant and formula which they called Location Based Services (LBS) example would be like P=(X,Y) to trace the most exact routes as much as possible.

The toponoym recognition or Name, Entity, Recognition and Classification (NERC) is system based labeling task to perform an automatic labeling sequences of recognition it is a state of the art representation of figures that calculate and suggest the most logical name it can find. Geo-coding and address coding system – geo this system generate the synonym of the name and address while address coding system analyses postal address records and map to translate into spatial representation using text fields. The idea is to trace the location easily and systematically through the use of text.

Finally the toponym generation which is highly critical this will generate the meta-data that is the results of all determinants just like the HTML coding in WebPages for easy searches. In summary the system creates a dual role by 1. Geospatial domain for Toponym Generation cycles through textual domain. 2. The textual domain for toponym resolution cycles through geospatial domain. The www.maps.google.com  from Google can be a very useful tool to formulate the mapping. Using the system will carefully create the most balance identification of the target location.

There is another idea for toponomy this idea is in the form of theoretical approach or a folktale of its location and may or may not be accepted and recorded in the library of United Nations Group of Experts on Geographical Name (UNGEGN) but it can be accepted in their community. For example, the City of Chicago is associated with New York although it is a different state, but it is accepted in the community during those times when it becomes popular. Another example is the Kentucky states that is referring to Kentucky River but uncertain that it is sometimes referred on a prairie or a meadow.
