THE ROLE OF LIBRARIAN IN A DIGITAL AGE
Library has become one of the most important parts of the school where students can research anything about their home works and other basic school needs and Librarian has become the major and most important person to look for inside the library, they all have the knowledge and expertise to look for the books and documents that the students have been looking for. Especially in a University where most of the lessons need special attention and masterful techniques in finding references, Librarians would definitely be a great help for student.
In today’s modern society where the advancement in computer technology has brought so much changes in the digital age, all major institution including the government, organization, businesses and hospitals and most of all the education system has been highly influenced by this modernization that has been highly advantageous to the society. The technology continues to grow by leaps and bound without measure and it will continue to grow as long as the needs for technology continue to arise. Students nowadays can highly rely on themselves even at home and in their mobile phone or laptop to take a research wherever they go. Especially for college students who seem to know all the most advance and latest trends in technology ahead of time. This has been the trends of education system nowadays.
So the question lies on what would be the role of College Librarians in the library if students seem to gather all information on their own using their computers? It is quiet an odd to know the differences of the library system of today than the past system of yesterday’s libraries.
Today Librarians can also be called a School Library Media Specialist (SLMS), they are the modern librarians who have recognized and adopted the importance of technology. They have realized the needs to add the system to the old pattern of Dewey decimal days of arranging and looking for books and manuals of old schools to a modern database of mouse click and a keyboard searching and typing. Students can easily find the books they are looking for using the database. As you can see the role of the librarian is highly technologically advance nowadays. A certain college university should learn to harness the importance of the evolving technology and mastery to become highly relevant in the digital age.
These changes has been brought about by school desire to stay in touch with the latest trends, expand and develop innovative ideas and define a clear highest education standard for the welfare of college students. College Librarians are contributors of changes in a professional degree. They still possess the old school habit of Dewey decimal era since it is still applicable in a college university of finding books. Librarians still encourage students to use books since it has a different purpose. Technology may highly rely on electricity but books do not. They equally realize the differences and the importance of the old fashioned ways of learning which is not fast-paced but equally important in learning habits. This has been their basic roles to help students to learn to adopt such technology and to bring in forefront the technology system if needed. These are the qualities of highly effective modern Librarian or School Library Media Specialist in the digital age.
