The Way Ahead

Managements a skill is an important aspect in any field, whether it is in school, work, or even at home. Having good or even excellent management skills plays a significant role in the success of the endeavours of any individual. The managers of Club 24 have effectively handled the issues in the company particularly in the collection department. Club 24 is a financial services company that was established in the year 1977, and it is a part of the company Next plc. Club 24 was one of the best companies dealing with finances and it has maintained a fast rate of growth even before the company have utilised sophisticated and new technologies to facilitate the work and support the operations, and because of that the company has established an excellent portfolio. However, during the late eighties there was a succeeding failure in the credit industry at the same time there was a huge competition on the economy and other financial services company, therefore there was an overall decline in the retail finance market. The status of the company became unstable and the management have undergone changes that include combining the resources of the company and reducing the costs due to the changes implemented in the Club 24 the future of all the workers and even the company have been disturbed.

The changes that were made by the Club 24 had a concept of offering a committed bureau service to other companies. The main feature of the bureau services of Club 24 is the operations of the arrears collection and the idea of the Stairway Project evolved because of the transforming context which was profiled from the bureau services.

This paper examines the characteristics of  and analyses if her characteristics fit the role of the Senior Collections Manager. In order to attain that goal  must be responsible for the development of her career and personality through managing a self-assessment inventory by identifying, reviewing, and assessing the performance and management skills. Maintaining and formulating the current portfolio, and devising a personal development plan to attain the personal targets as well as the short-term and long-term objectives. In addition, an evaluation of the learning and development against the objectives set in the original personal development plan and then resetting the objectives after the evaluation will be discussed.

In the year 1991,  together with some employees was appointed as the new managers in the collection department of Club 24.   was involved in the project called the Focus on collections which is a motivational intervention wherein it includes a small team of collectors and supervisors. However, even if an intervention was made the whole department had a lukewarm reception on the idea the majority of the people in the collections department were neither enthusiastic nor criticise the intervention. The culture of the collection’s department is not favourable because of low commitment of the employees, minimum interaction, there is a high rate of absenteeism and labour turnover and the supervisors had low responsibility over their subordinates. Due to this unfavourable culture Club 24 was faced with the possibility of being closed and because of these problems the managers have implemented the Stairway programme. When became the senior collections manager of Club 24 was the main person behind the Stairway programme. The essential plan of  was to enhance the morale of the employees in the department and make them motivated and committed in their jobs, together with , the collections department become successful with their goal of improving the morale and status not just on the collection’s department but also the whole Club 24.l After the implementation of the Stairway programme and it became a success  is soon to be promoted to a senior position in the parent company which is Next plc. Due to the fact that I was one of the persons behind the success of the Stairway programme I have plans of being the next senior collections manager. However being a senior collections manager is not an easy task therefore I must assess my capabilities and skills as an employee and supervisor.

Assess the Management Skills

According to  (2006) in identifying the management skills of an individual one must identify his or her skills as an effective manager, self-awareness, belief and values, ability to use strategic management, goal setting, identifying the poor performance and motivation, management of a diverse workforce, managerial leadership, and utilising teams.

Skills of an effective manager

As an individual wishing to take the responsibility of being the next Senior Collections manager I feel that I have the essential skills of an efficient manager because I find it easy to communicate whether in written or oral form, as well as, listening. I am capable of handling stress and I occasionally have problems in time management. I also do not have problems making decisions that would have an impact on me and other people as well. I can also identify, analyse and solve problems efficiently. I can also be effective in getting other workers to perform in their optimum levels. I also set goals and sets-up long-term objectives. I know my strengths and weaknesses. I can work with groups and if conflicts may arise I am able to resolve the differences.

Self-Awareness

As a manager and an individual I am relatively aware of myself and I am open to feedback from other people because I look for information on my strengths and weaknesses from other people, as well as a basis for improving myself. I also do not get angry or become defensive if I receive negative feedback. I also have a well-developed and established personal standards and principles which helps me in my behaviour.

Belief and Values

Becoming a leader it is important to have a set of belief and values that would guide a person in every task he or she undertakes. As an individual I have a conventional religious outlook. I value constructive utilisation of time and the accomplishment of the goals. I also avoid emotional risks. My view regarding ideals and notions of other people is liberal or tolerant. I also have a deterministic viewpoint with strong faith in science as a tool in understanding and dealing with other people and I am optimistic about life and people.

Strategic Management

According to  (2007) strategic management is increasingly essential in companies and organisations and the supervisors or managers are the people responsible for the tasks and activities in various functional areas. As an individual pursuing for the position of a senior collections manager I have an idea and understanding on the strategic management and I am prepared to perform the role of a strategic manager.

Goal-Setting

According to  (1984) goal setting is a crucial element in the efficiency of an organisation. As an individual my characteristics as a leader is suitable in organisations that have successful goal-setting program. If I became the new senior collections manager my focus would be members of the department must understand their jobs, goals that will be implemented in the department must be challenging and reasonable, there would be goal deadlines and clear objectives, the managers must encourage the members to reach their goals, the goals must be implemented, the members must get credit for the accomplishment of the goals, at the same time, they must receive a feedback, competition must be enhanced, and the stressing of goals to the members and the managers, as well.

Diagnosing Poor Performance and Enhancing Motivation

According to  (1991) the performance appraisals of the members and managers, as well as, the feedback are an important constituent in the assurance of good performances in the organisation. And as a leader I feel that I am extremely capable of identifying the performance problems and undertake actions and plans to correct them.

Management of a Diverse Workforce

According to  (1991) organisations in the world becomes more diverse as it expands and managing diversity is increasingly important. I am capable of managing diversity because my beliefs about management of diversity are accurate, and I am more open in dealing with various individuals from different racial and religious backgrounds.

Managerial Leadership

According to  (1986) leadership is now regarded as significant characteristics for everyone in the organisation, but most especially to the leaders. My characteristics that ensures I have an efficient leadership capabilities are I emphasise performance, I show consideration, I provide career counselling, I give praises and recognition to the right people, and I set goals for the team.

Utilising Teams

According to  (1990) the utilisation of groups and teams is now becoming more common in various organisations around the world. I can be able to use teams in the department efficiently because I know the limitations of teamwork and these are focusing on accountability of individuals could undermine the effort to develop a team, complete authority in the team may lead to anarchy, the teams must be kept small and must have clear boundaries in which it can enable motivations among the team members, the team needs coaching and support by the managers in the organisation.

Portfolio of Work

My current portfolio as a manager will be maintained together with the assessment of my management skills since my track record as a development training manager is good, therefore there would be no changes in my Portfolio.

Personal Development Plan

According to (2005) a personal development plan helps a manager to assure success in the business. The personal development plan helps the manager prioritise the most significant areas that must be focused and will aid in finding the right direction.

Areas that needs development

I am far from perfect, as a possible senior collections manager I also have my share of disadvantages that needs to be improved. Some of the areas that I think I need development are the communications skills, prioritising, motivation skills, and analysis. In order to enhance these skills and become an efficient manager I must:

Encourage innovation among my subordinates

If the members of the team are able to give off an excellent performance in terms of innovations this is due to the assurance that there is a good communication of the innovation strategy wherein it fits the overall vision of the company. The motivation of the team members in the department may aid in the development of new services in the business. The department must be assured that the resources are available for the development of new ideas for the company. And as a leader I must ensure that the people responsible behind the ideas must be recognised.  In order to improve in this particular area as a leader I should obtain some advice on:

·        The development of management strategies for innovation and then be able to communicate it across the department.

·        Techniques for determining and pursuing available opportunities to work with other people that are experts in the field.

·        Recognition and management of the risks and encourage the members to undertake risks.

·        Giving constructive feedback on the concepts to the teams and its members.

Plan Change

A good outcome in this area is due to the assessment of the interval between the current and future state of roles, systems and structures. Assessment of the risks and benefits that could be obtained with the strategies and plans that will be utilised. The plans must include short-term and long-term goals. The systems for the monitor and assessment of the progress must be created, and a strategy on communication must be developed to be able to give the members constructive feedback. In order to improve in this particular area as a leader I should obtain some advice on:

  • The major models and methods in an efficient change management.

  • Application of the changes in the department.

  • Understanding the purpose of teams in the department.

  • Assessment of the risks and benefits that is related with strategies.

Lead Change

Excellent results in this area are due to the effective communication of the vision of the manager in the future and the reasons for implementing change in the department. The people behind the planning and management of change must be able to understand their responsibilities. The strategies in attaining the vision must be identified and must be communicated to the members of the department. In order to improve in this particular area as a leader I should obtain some advice on:

  • The major techniques and methods for implementing organisational change and assess the strengths and weakness of each model.

  • Application of the risk assessment.

  • The utilisation of various styles in leadership in different conditions.

  • The methods to counter the political, resource and bureaucratic barriers must be determined in order to deal with these.

Manage a program of projects

Excellent outcomes in this are due to the assurance that everyone involved in the programme must have a clear understanding. The people involved in the projects must be able to understand the crucial aspects of the programme. The programmes must be controlled and monitored and must be able to attain the objectives on time, and make recommendations that would identify areas for improvement. In order to improve in this particular area as a leader I should obtain some advice on:

  • The difference between the management of programme and project and the role of the manager.

  • The management of tools, techniques and processes must be identified.

  • The assessment, motivation, management and monitoring of people must also be determine.

  • The management of changes in the projects and programmes of the department.

Strengths

As a leader and a member of the department my strengths include leadership skills, decision making skills, problem-solving, evaluation and planning. And because of the strengths I have the capability of carrying out the following tasks and these are:

Assurance that the department has an efficient health and safety policy

As a leader I understand the advantages that would be obtained from an efficient approach to the health and safety of the members of the department wherein the absenteeism of employees due to sickness would be reduced.

Promote Technology in the Department

The department needs new technology in ensuring the clients of the company that the work is done in a very efficient manner. Promoting technology in the department ensures the company, as well as the members the efficacy of the work.

Management of the Budget

As a senior collections manager budgets on the department are one of the tasks handled by the manager. Due to the strengths I am able to prepare, submit and discuss the budget for the department; moreover I could identify and predict the possible circumstances that may arise in the future.

Being a senior collection manager is not an easy task, however because of the innate ambitiousness there is a huge possibility that I would be taking over the job from  The task of a Senior Collections Manager is difficult but I believe that I have the necessary skills and experience to effectively implement the existing programmes and changes in the future.
