Human Dependency on Technology

1.0 Title

The working title of the study is initially drafted as – Human Dependence on Technology. What we are currently witnessing is the extreme dependence of humans on technology. Human dependency on technology has become a pressing issue among researchers and the results seem to become a great concern.

2.0 Introduction

Humans are now living in an era wherein constant technological innovations are introduced, making the lives of the people easier. En route to an e-society, technological items are utilised frequently that the personal use of such has become a necessity to everyday life. The question now is whether the frequency and volume of using personal technology a good thing. Although technology is indispensable in the business setting, is the same stance goes when it comes to personal technology? Among the socialists and psychologists of today, there is a fear of losing the natural creative ability of the human mind to function as this is taken over by personal technological items including cellphones, laptops and iPods among others. There is also the fear of negatively impacting the personal relationships of technology-dependent humans.

3.0 Problem of the Study

The key problem that will be explored in the study is how dependent are humans on technology when it comes to supporting their personal needs? What is the role of personal technology on the lives of the people? Is personal technology a good thing or a bad thing? Is the dependence of humans on these personal technologies beneficial or destructive? These and other questions will be given answer to in this study. These other questions are:

1)    How important are personal technologies to humans?

2)    How do humans perceive the role of personal technologies in their lives?

3)    From their perspective, are personal technologies beneficial or is it slowly becoming destructive?

4.0 Research Aim and Objectives

The main aim of the study is to determine the extent of dependence of humans on personal technology. In lieu with this, the following research objectives will be addressed:

  • To analyse the level of importance that humans give to personal technologies

  • To understand the dynamics why humans are dependent on personal technologies

5.0 Research Methodology

The research strategy that the study will utilize is the descriptive method. A descriptive research intends to present facts concerning the nature and status of a situation, as it exists at the time of the study (Creswell, 1994). It is also concerned with relationships and practices that exist, beliefs and processes that are ongoing, effects that are being felt, or trends that are developing. (Best, 1970) In addition, such approach tries to describe present conditions, events or systems based on the impressions or reactions of the respondents of the research (Creswell, 1994). This research is also cross-sectional because of limited time. This research is a study of a particular phenomenon (or phenomena) at a particular time. (Saunders et al, 2003) Accordingly, cross-sectional studies often employ the survey strategy, and they may be seeking to describe the incidence of a phenomenon or to compare factors in different organizations.

In this study, primary and secondary research will be both incorporated. The reason for this is to be able to provide adequate discussion for the readers that will help them understand more about the issue and the different variables that involve with it. The primary data for the study will be represented by the survey results that will be acquired from the respondents. On the other hand, the literature reviews to be presented in the second chapter of the study will represent the secondary data of the study. The secondary sources of data will come from published articles from books, journals and theses and related studies.
