If you are good enough counselor, you can counsel anyone’ –

Discuss what are important here? Could you counsel anyone? What would be excluded? Why?

Accordingly, “counseling is not merely advisement, but rather as a learning process for the individual whereby he gains increased understanding and insights which could enable him to cope effectively in the life situations, be it in the realm of vocational choice, educational decisions,  behavioral problems, normal growth crises and so on”.  (Cited from, Abdul Halim Othman, 1999 in Menon 1972)

INTRODUCTION

Truly it can be that, counseling approach assumes that individuals who have experienced disability can better understand and relate to individuals trying to deal with their disability.  Additionally, there is promotion of such wellness model which considers the clients to be normal, as conducted in either group or an individual setting and has the goal of living philosophy and encouraging clients to embrace it. Basically, several people avoid counseling as if it is a disease or a prison sentence. The truth is that trained counselors can be very effective at helping you sort through any issue that is plaguing you. If you had a constant pain in your abdomen, chances are you would visit a doctor if it lasted more than a day or two.

BODY

Ideally, certain experience tells people that if people are not properly matched to a counselor and have bad experience, they may never again return for the help they need. There is in a way a structured process in order to try eliminating as many obstacles for recovery purposes. Henceforth, such counselors sought support from other counselors with whom they shared frustrations, war stories, and shoptalk that included helpful strategies and procedures (Cited from, Bruce and Willower 2001 in Willower, 1994).

Nevertheless, these relationships appeared to be more personal and practical than professional. Then, counselors described their participation in professional workshops and the like as sporadic rather than regular. Furthermore, some clash between professional ideals and organizational demands is common complaint of employed professionals. At the same time, professional work in organizations is always concrete, embedded in contexts that may be complex and feature contradictory pressures (Cited from, Bruce and Willower 2001 in Willower, 1994).

A good counselor knows how to counsel effectively and possibly have the expertise to counsel anyone and assess such personality paradigms in such context of certain attitude and behavior domains respectively. Ideally, it can be true that a good counselor can counsel anyone but amiably the counselor himself cannot hardly push anyone to undergo such counseling sessions. Aside, it depends on the responding approach of the one being counseled such as for instance, if a counselor intends to counsel a young teenager but the teenager in return does not recognize the counseling process given to him so, it can be that the imperative goal and purpose of counseling is a failure and that the counseling notion turn out to be useless or none sense since, the ideal situation pointing to the counselor and the teenager is not balanced and it does not follow such standards in such counseling context respectively.

Moreover, the core composition of counseling does adhere to certain rules and guidelines of counseling principles and its underlying standards that is deemed accepted by such major counseling groups and institution as of today’s modern epoch. Yet, it can be that as a good counselor, the counselor can counsel anyone in such concept valuation and range of his perspective but he cannot indirectly impose counseling on anyone such as in forms of unnoticed sessions and other matters since, as the counseling confronts to sanctions of professionalism and integrity then, the counselor should be aware of human rights in respect, privacy as well as confidentiality. In other words, a good counselor can counsel anyone in general notion and view but he cannot force anyone for counseling, which goes around with such exclusion aspects of counseling. Furthermore, some people have fears when being thought of “counseling” that has possibly stem from certain myths surrounding counselors and counseling cycle such as the thinking of:

-         Only people who are really ‘sick’ go to counseling

-         I don’t know who to go to for counseling

-         I can’t afford counseling

In reality, counseling can be non-threatening, positive experience.  The most important decision comes in choosing counselor, it is imperative that such patients find counselor who has prior experience working for example to those victims of sexual beating.  Then, the counselor should be comfortable with such issues specific to the recovery of the client needing the counseling path as there is confidential relationship between the patient and the counselor implying that anyone can participate in counseling without anyone else knowing. Thus, it is enormously vital to have chances for venting and sorting out of such feelings and emotions in desired supportive ambiance. There was recent Gallup poll reveals 81 percent of men and women want their values respected and integrated into counseling process as the need is there and counselors no doubt have the best intentions but it possibly won’t shield them from such issues.

Ideally, counselors should be clear about the expertise they will offer as along with specifically excluded services such as “consultation” services as the preventive services and across the board counseling are not covered as it does not deem reasonable and necessary. For example, in the absence of any previous notification, having billing history that clearly demonstrates correct coverage assessments by the provider would show that the provider was not likely to know that the service would not be covered. (Cited from, RaeAnn Slaybaugh, 2002. Counseling Can Be Risky: Guarding your good Samaritans is crucial, 10/01/2002)

However, in situations in which services furnished do not meet locally acceptable standards of practice, the provider is considered to have known that Medicare payment for the service would be denied. The objective then is to give the patient sufficient information to allow an informed choice as to whether to pay for the service. (Cited from, RaeAnn Slaybaugh, 2002. Counseling Can Be Risky: Guarding your good Samaritans is crucial, 10/01/2002)  In addition, Welch argues that the record is “clear” that the issue of the counselor patient privilege did not exist at the end of the status hearing and that the motion was therefore resolved during that hearing. There was subsequent motion for deposition of the counselor and the actual taking of that deposition show that parties essentially regarded Welch’s motion in review as moot. (Cited from, RaeAnn Slaybaugh, 2002. Counseling Can Be Risky: Guarding your good Samaritans is crucial, 10/01/2002)

In the broader context, counselors should be well informed about the nature of such individual behavior as geared towards better assumptions of moral philosophy and such ethical decision making patterns. Therefore, it is essential that such counseling involves a confidential dialogue that incurs an intervention that deals with one’s feelings incorporating strategy to develop personal plans of life and thus, the process helps to dissipate fears and possibly diminish anxieties and anger as well as paralyzing frustrations that leads to have such functional decisions. There should inspire the client to make best decisions that would bring happiness to his heart and soul and the fact that counseling is more about guidance and orientation rather than merely prescription of something wrong and not normal.

CONCLUSION

Therefore, there can be integration of sympathy and support as well as certain assessment to reduce such risks within the delivery of useful knowledge cycles in attaining normal state of feelings and emotions within the understanding of such practices and prevent problems at risk within the understanding of the gamut of option an individual has that has ideal sense of confidentiality and meeting the person’s needs and the matter of the patient’s agenda not the counselor, truly empowering the client in taking control of his actions and decisions created. Then, a good counselor’ formal professional activities can be intermittent as there ties to the profession that can be more informal and concrete in such value assimilation. It can be that as necessary as possible, such counselors adapted to and often deferred to organizational pressures, meanwhile attempting to keep conventional counselor identity and autonomy.
