IMPROVING VOCABULARY AT SECONDARY LEVEL
There are many methods secondary level students can learn and enjoy at the same time as much as possible teachers would like to prioritize reading comprehension as one of the integral part of the curriculum including mathematics and social science. Most teachers would associate a simplified technique so that student in secondary level can associate simple learning and play. These techniques have been found exciting and comprehensive that student will surely love;
· Simple Story Reading – This is a very basic and one the oldest method of teaching students on how they are going to improve their vocabulary, a simple story reading can improve their skills and reading comprehension as much as learned lessons in the story. This method is used for primary and secondary level. After the story reading students are taught or ask to discuss what they have learned from the story or write some reaction about it. Students will enjoy great stories and they learn morally.
· Word of the Day – In an English class, before or after the lesson this special technique is being use so that student can learn a new word that is not much familiar to them. This single word are used and explain by their teachers and give simple examples then later it will be the class who would use the word and construct a sentence, for secondary pupil it seems like a play. Sometimes teacher would be the one to assign to the student to recite a new word of the day and discuss it in a simple manner inside their classroom.
· Text books and Quizzes – There are times that when teacher believe that the students have learned much. This old fashioned techniques works heavily in the mind of the child for they may be required and force to study hard to pass the quizzes. Text books will be their reference guide that they can use at home to study well.
· English Recitation – This is another method which the student must prepare and explore the topics of what they are going to recite in the class, sometimes the student may be feel uneasy at time but if they have prepared well they may feel excited and the class would feel proud and amaze after the presentation. But a poor recitation may scare the student but basically they will still learn from this activity. One of the most popular English Recital is the Abraham Lincoln “Gettysburg Address”. Four score and seven years ago, and “A Glass of Water”.
· Writing or Short Story Writing – Students are ask by their instructor to write about their biography, about their dreams five years from now, reaction about a current event like the climate change etc. Student will surely love to write about their personality and their ambition. This technique shows their creativity and what they learned from school. Teachers use this method to identify the student’s level of ability as much as identify the pattern of lessons a particular student would need to improve their vocabulary skills.
· Puzzles and Board Games – This technique is often use for primary level but it is also applicable and enjoyable in secondary level, they will basically learn from word hunt, scrabble and crossword puzzle easily since in their mind this is just a game. No pressure is exhibited so they can learn.
· Software and Internet Vocabulary Study guide – This is a very good guide for student in all level since they can use it in school and at home. Good software would include Interactive Dictionary, Puzzle games, Audio guide for pronunciation and evaluation guide or grading system so students and teachers can guide their progression upon the course of study. Highly recommended software is Ultimate Vocabulary and highly recommended game is Typer Shark and Text Twist which can be easily downloaded on the Internet.
· Spelling quiz bee – Probably one of the most exciting activity in secondary school that students really love is a spelling quiz been. This will give them the opportunity to show their skills of what they have learned and what they can achieve. The prize they are going to receive gives them more motivation to engage in such activity. The contestant will prepare and learn so much and the audience will basically learn from them. The overall winner will gain confidence and will receive the prize and prestige or a trophy that they can boost for a lifetime. Such student may even be given an opportunity to be included in inter-school challenge nationwide.
These activities are used and enjoyed by students in secondary level. Additionally I would like to emphasize one of the most important learning tips that can give a boost to student to learn is the support they can get at home. It is critically important that they will gain their desire to learn from their parents, they should be the role model at home in whatever subject they would like to engage into. Through these reason’s, Student will basically understand the value of education if they see the willingness and desire from their loved ones.
