Leaders primarily work through and with other people. They also help to establish the conditions that enable others to be effective. Leadership is a function more than a role. Although leadership is often invested in – or expected of – persons in positions of formal authority, leadership encompasses a set of functions that may be performed by any different persons in different roles throughout a community.
The life of Spartacus has been a living testimony up to this day of his strong beliefs and principles regarding economic, social, and political ideals. Great revolutionists, particularly communist rebels have used the life of Spartacus to inspire their motives and aspirations for free and equal society. Karl Marx, Che Guevarra and other civil wars recorded in history brought about by social inequalities and injustices have portrayed their strong beliefs which are in league with the principles of Spartacus. His influence in modern times is likewise evident in the academic works, novels and films that depicted his heroic existence as one of the most inspiring people in the history of mankind.
The novel Spartacus by was a picturesque masterpiece of the application of leadership skills in the identity of Spartacus, the great Roman slave gladiator. In the story it was evident how Spartacus illustrated his commitment, competence, and coordination skills to be victorious in the wars he led. He was very committed to his objectives and principles to free himself and the rest of the slaves he had been with as fueled by the injustices he himself witnessed and experienced in the hands of the Roman Republicans. The corrupt desire for power by Crassus who personified the slaves’ most prominent challenge served as the motivating factor for Spartacus to exude excellence in the life he chose.
Spartacus led a difficult life due to the political and social setting of his time. He was a born slave and a trained gladiator. During his time, the Roman Republic imprisoned too much slaves which according to history is much greater than the umber of free citizens in Italy. The inhumane sufferings of the slaves in the hands of the soldiers along with other imprisoned gladiators then became a remarkable moment in history. It was Spartacus and colleague prisoners who enabled the escape of slaves from the Romans brutality. These slave prisoners were not only composed of men and sentenced gladiators but also consist women and children who have been living difficult lives in the society they are in. they inspire Spartacus to be objective in his decisions.
Spartacus capability to bring his fellow prisoners to freedom was made evident in his popularity in the gladiator betting game of war to amuse the free citizens as well as the politicians and influential personalities in the society. Like animals, they were trained to fight each other in a public show setting to provide entertainment to audiences in which their lives are the rewards they get from fighting and killing viciously their opponents. The war skills of the gladiators and the strong beliefs of an influential slave in the personality of Spartacus resulted to a great Roman slave escape which up to this day is world renowned. In this light, it was the sufferings he experienced that made him clamor for freedom and an equal society were the likes of him can live peacefully and with dignity.
The success of the escape has been credited to Spartacus since it was his strategic plans and military intellect that set them free. This is due to his good training in the art of war as well as his superb leadership skills to serve as an example to other freed slaves. Along with the fact that all the slaves in Italy can outnumber the number of free citizens in Italy, Spartacus emerged victorious in the wars which he led. This is despite the lack of armory supplies and training of the slaves who joined him as well as the limited number of able-bodied slaves who can fight well. His success in the three uprisings he led highlighted his existence.
