What should I do to answer my research questions?

1.  The first question is:

What are the levels of capability of 8th grade students in terms of their knowledge on equivalent equations and their identification of other known equations?

I will do this test to the students:

1-The two equations 4=4x+16 and 4x+4=16 are they equivalent?

2- The two equations x+2=5 and x+2-2=5-2 are they equivalent?

3- The two equations 2+2x=8 and 4x=8 are they equivalent?

4- The two equations 4x+4=8 and 4x+4=8-4 are they equivalent?

5- The two equations x+2=5 and x+2-5=0 are they equivalent?

6- The two equations 2x+3x=10 and 5x=10 are they equivalent?

7-The two equations 2x=3=5 and 2x+3-3=5-1 are they equivalent?

8- The two equations x+2=5 and x+2-44=5-44 are they equivalent?

9- The two equations 2(x+5)=12 and 2x+5=12 are they equivalent?

10-find an equivalent equation to the following:

(a)  3x=6

(b)  3x+2=5

(c)  2x-3=5

Algebraic Representation of Mathematical word problem

(2) What is the degree of competence of the students in translating the word problem into algebraic expression?

Word problem                                               Algebraic Expression

1-Write down the expression for the

     sum of number and 7?

2- Write down the expression for the

a number is divided by 5 and then

3 is added to the result.

3- Write down the expression for the

the product of a number and 8 is

    subtracted from 100.

4-write an equation of the sum of

a certain number and 4 is 13.

5-write an equation of a number is

multiplied   by 3, and 5 is added to

the product, and the answer is 17.

6-write an equation of twice a number

plus seven is the same as three times

the number plus one.

Geometrical Representation of Mathematical word problem

(3) What is the degree of competence of the students in translating the word problem into Geometrical expression?

Word problem                                               Geometrical Shape

(1) Draw a shape of a right angled triangle

One angle is 49.

(2) AB and CD are each perpendicular to a line

     XY. Draw such a diagram.

(3) ABCD is a square. The diagonals are drawn and

intersect at X. Draw this diagram.

(4) D is the center of a circle. AB and CD

are equal chords. Draw this diagram.

(5) In the triangle ABC, DE is drawn

parallel to BC. Draw such a diagram.

What is the degree of comprehension of 8th grade students in solving simple to complex equations?

Solve:

(1)  x+7=20

(2)  x-3=-6

(3)  3x=18

(4)  x/3=5

(5)  2x+5=13

(6)  3x-7=23

(7)  x/3-9=4

(8)  3+8x=4x-5

(9)  5-2x=3x-15

How effective is training in their skills in developing strategy problem solving and retention in solving algebraic word problem and geometric word problem?

After that, I will have three groups:

(A)            The direct content strategy group:

They will be trained on solving algebraic word problem using this strategy formulation:

The strategy I will follow consists of the following steps:

  • Studying and understanding the problem carefully.

  • Rephrasing the problem in the student’s own words.

  • Determining the data in the question.

  • Stating the required.

  • Introducing the pro-numeral and defining their meanings.

  • Write down the equation or equations that clarify relationships between assumptions and required data.

  • Solve equation or equations.

  • Answer the problem.

  • Checking the solution.

  •

    (B)               Also they will be trained on solving geometrical word problem using this strategy formulation:

    (1) Understanding the problem carefully.

    (2) Drawing a diagram.

    (3) Identifying the hypothesis using diagram symbols.

    (4) Identifying the conclusion using diagram symbols.

    (5) Putting solving plan.

    (6) Carrying out the solution.

    (7) Checking the solution.

    (B) Indirect Content Strategy (the second group)

They will be trained by improving their algebraic and geometrical skills, by helping them to solve the mathematical problem by using the strategy formulation but in indirect way, I mean without mention any thing about the steps and helping them to invent, discover or develop strategy formulation.

©The third group is (No-strategy group):

They will be taught according to the textbook method. At the end

I will prepare two achievement tests.  The first test will be applied directly after the experiment whereas the second test will be applied two weeks later than the first test.

After that, I will collect, sort and analyse the data.

At the end, I will make my recommendation.
