Every people have their own right on how to manage their life. They have a freedom to choose where to live, where to work, and make their own decisions. People are born free and everyone is entitled to use it as a privilege. They call their way of life as the lifestyle. Most of the time, when one hears the word “lifestyle”, it is natural for him to think about luxurious things – cars, mansions, and even expensive food. But in reality, lifestyle is the cue on how people live inside the comfort of their home, most specially on how they manage their own life.

I am a meat eater, I don’t like vegetables and I don’t exercise. I love computers, and I love to sleep. Am I lazy? Well, apparently yes. That’s my lifestyle. But from the current studies taken by the professionals, the lifestyle or the way we enjoy the life is also the same thing that will lead the people into serious health problems.

Diabetes

Diabetes is usually characterized with high blood sugar or Hyperglycemia in medical terms. Experts defined it when the body’s blood glucose level is equal or more than 200 mg/dl. The fluctuation of blood glucose happened before and after meal, therefore diabetes is diagnosed as an 8-hour fasting. This disease is classified in four categories, the type 1 diabetes (insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus); type 2 diabetes (non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus); gestational diabetes, which occurs in pregnant women but often disappears after pregnancy; and other diabetic diseases caused by genetic abnormalities, medication use, and associated illness (2007).

Historically, diabetes is a kind of disease that affects all aspects and age range, whether a person belongs in racial or ethnic groups. The type 1 diabetes has no visible causes or even the medication or control but the record suggests that it has a strong genetic basis that is modified by the environmental factors. This includes the viruses and having a family member with a same type of disease are other considered risk actors. Part of the diabetes studies, identified that the lifestyle and overweight or obesity are other factors to develop the diabetes.

The risk can be reduced if the person with diabetic symptoms will reduce his weight and maintained an ideal healthy lifestyle. Significantly, the lifestyle is related with the activities and body functions affects the glucose and body fats. Experts also added that a regular physical activity like exercise and healthy diet can help attain the ideal body weight of a diabetic person ( 2004).

Prevention, Medication and Treatment

With under the continue investigation and research, the medical community pointed out that the diseases can be prevented or delayed through the lifestyle changes in most of the risk persons. The health providers offer weight loss and physical activity programs to help the patients change their lifestyle and guiding their hourly meal. The importance of exercise and healthy lifestyle is encouraging the youth and the parents to help prevent this kind of disease.

Many advocates already implemented the education of the relationship of the lifestyle and diabetes and the idea of self managing techniques. These techniques are applied in individuals who have the high diabetes risk. Together with the change in lifestyle, the blood monitoring and management and proper prescription can slow the progression of the disease (2004).

The self monitoring and management can be done through simple steps by daily checking the feet if it is showing the sores and the blood pressure. These simple means can save the future of every individual who faces the disease.

But above all, the doctor and the patient must work together to gain the control on diabetes and any other risk factors that might be included. The withdrawal on bad habits is necessary such as smoking because it can only triggered for more serious and life threatening disease ( 2005).

It is better if a person will quit his bad habits and live his life to the best he can be. It is worth living in a world where people are not only free in doing the things they want to do but free in any life-threatening diseases.
