Trade Research Proposal on Hair Strengthening Products Exportation from Canada to UK and South Africa

1.0 Introduction

The working title of the study is initially drafted as: Trade Research Proposal on Hair Strengthening Products Exportation from Canada to UK and South Africa. In particular, the research will focus on the trade aspect of exporting hair strengthening products to two very different places. The paper discusses in detail the research proposal of the topic. In this research proposal, the problem of the study is presented; the objectives of the study are formulated. Here, vital concepts, questions and assumptions are stated. Finally, the methodology to be used is discussed.

According to Davis (2010), hair strengthening is a generic term for the creation of healthy hair, both in appearance and make-up. Hair strengthening products are easily available from supermarkets and specially developed for all types of hairs. These products come in oil, cream and even through food intakes. Further, hair strengthening products are an integral part of any solid hair growing regimen (Sivasothy, 2009). As such, these products aid the hair in withstanding day-to-day damage and breakage so that hair realizes great potential over time.

In exporting hair strengthening products, there are four phases. In the first phase, there is a need for internal and external analyses and business strategy and internationalisation. In the second phase, there is a need for country analysis and selection, value chain and supply chain set-up and export market strategy and entry modes. Basically, the study is eyeing the UK and the South African markets. However, there could be differences in export market strategy and mode of entry. In the third phase, marketing mix and competitive positioning, logistics and organization and financial plan are the things need be considered.  In the last phase, there are needs for customer relationship management and sales implementation plan and supply chain management plan.

2.0 Statement of the Problem

For this study, the focus will be on the first two phases of export planning. There is the need to determine the trading characteristics of exporting hair strengthening products to UK and South Africa by conducting external analysis, business strategy recommendations, country analysis and selection, export market strategy and entry modes. In lieu with this, the following research questions will be given answer to:

1) In terms of trade, how exporting hair strengthening products to UK compare with exporting hair strengthening products to South Africa?

2) In terms of country analysis and selection, what makes these two markets suitable for the export of hair strengthening products from Canada?

3) In terms of country analysis, will the culture relating to using hair care products affect the materialisation of export trading?

3.0 Research Methodology

Basically, the study is a qualitative study since the study will try to find and build theories that will explain the relationship between trading in Canada and the UK and Canada and South Africa. According to Nykiel (2007), there are two main advantages to using qualitative study. The first is it enables the researcher for interaction with respondents.

The research will be exploratory because it aims to determine the present facts as well as facts that are not yet explored about the phenomenon (Saunders et al, 2003). Exploratory research will enable the study to look at the problem in both descriptive and exploratory manner. This approach is a preferred mean of finding out “what is happening to seek new insights” or “to ask questions or to assess phenomena in a new light” (Saunders et al, 2003). This study will use the principal ways of conducting exploratory research, which include: literature search; talking to experts about the subject; and conducting in-depth interviews.
