THEMATIC APPERCEPTION REACTION OF A CRIPPLED CHILD

Thematic Apperception Test is one of the most often used kind of test for psychological analysis that reveals the lifeless or unconscious personality of the patient or person involved, this kind of test uses the picture interpretation technique. According to the strategy of the examiner they may choose various pictures to show and interpret by asking a series of a guided question that will evaluate the patient.

The examiner will show to the child a series of images or picture that is associated in their life, usually the child or the patient will express their ideas about the picture and how it is related to their life or they will simply kept in silence and pause for a while and think about it, they will sometimes may react harshly and they may simply cry about. Some children may refuse to see the picture but the examiner or doctor will usually set another schedule for the test.

If there is no adequate picture or images that are available for a moment, the examiner will simply ask series of questions to the child. The challenge for the examiner is for the child to express their emotional either violently or cautiously. The examiner should be sensitive about the child and they must record most of the answer for they may find it hard to ask another question especially to a crippled child. If the child is in cooperative mode the examiner may continue. The evaluation about the child performance is important to distinguish the present behavior and cognitive thinking.

The examiner will evaluate the child according to their behavior although there is no exact pattern involved here but a child’s thought can be highly recognize according to their reaction. If the child reacts in a defensive state the examiner would think that he is in a denial state or may not be ready to face his life or present condition. If there is a recent happening in child’s life then the examiner may not allow the test to continue especially if the child feels that they are being tested for something. This situation may happen as a child’s defense mechanism to cope up and resist the condition. Some child at this state may have experience a varied form of fear or phobia.

The child may also be violent simply to hide his emotion or to hide his fear that results in resistance or buck passing of the problem but this happens mostly to adult not usually for a child. Or the child may never speak at all and for a quite few moment therefore his emotion is closed, another form of defense mechanism when the child simply remains in silence although he may not refuse.

A child may consciously identify the pictures that happens in his real life and he may be honest about it, at this point the child can associate themselves with what might have happen and they may be ask about his past life. There is no form of resistance in this stage and the examiner may be happy about it to find a cure. The child may also be cooperative to incorporate the images in the experience or in their personality but not necessarily accepting the past experiences.

Another reaction a crippled child may show upon practicing thematic apperception reaction would be an honest ability to acquire and identify his present situation especially from a conscious child, this show emotional stability on the part of the child and openness to be reminded about past experiences this kind of patients is mostly assured to have a strong condition of release from psychological stress of being matured beyond age.

Depending on the situation, the examiner at this point should prepare a more identified questions to release the emotion and knowledge of the child but this time the examiner would need to be more cautious about the expression, they may presume that the child may suffer a different kind of interchanging emotion that would make him resist such question for the fear to return in Childs mind.  If for example the child has been physically abused the examiner may prepared a question like; what happened to your legs or arms? Or how are you feeling right now? Some questions may be more specific but not intimidating.

Sometimes a child may be almost cured but an irresponsible examiner may frighten the child if they have shown improper Thematic Apperception Test by using invalid images, they must also watch out about their gestures or approach. According to the interpretation or analysis of the child they may need another series of test to thoroughly bring back the child’s perception about normal life. A tender loving care is highly needed to take away the fear or anxiety in the life of a crippled child.
