Debate on the Legalization of Soft Drugs
First and foremost, what are soft drugs? These are drugs that are believed by some people are less damaging to the health and non-addictive than a hard drug, and they are alcohol, cannabis and nicotine drugs. Argumentations and debates have spread around the globe nowadays regarding the legalization of these soft drugs. Public opinion has recently surprised by few proposals from the various countries that intend to legalize the use of soft drugs such as nicotine, cannabis and alcohol. Everybody knows that drug addiction is a leading problem now among youth as well as among adults across the globe. And, it caused serious impact to the psychological, social, spiritual and moral beings of any individual who is using it. However, different groups of people today are worried about the effects of the legalization of soft drugs in some other countries. According to the European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction (EMCDDA) in Lisbon; there are already 45 million people who have tried cannabis soft drug. About 15 million European people have initially tried cannabis in 1999. Additionally, in United Kingdom, there are 10 percent of adults who are already using the drugs. While Spain, has 7 percent of its population who are already cannabis dependent. Similarly, Denmark has 3 percent of its people who also hooked with this kind of soft drug; so as to the rest of the people in the European states. This controversial policy of “soft drugs” has already accepted and practiced already in various parts of Europe. In France and Netherlands, many people are already using cannabis, now in Belgium; smoking is already widespread among people in various regions, and it seems that the authority does not care anymore. The prevalent usage of cannabis, nicotine and alcohol in these places has been a controversy lately by many debaters in the world, especially those in Christian countries.

Nevertheless, there are various reports stating different opinions from various groups, there are people who really opposed on the soft drugs existence, for they may have detrimental influence on the society at large. There are arguments presented for the legalization of these “soft drugs”, some people say that it is better to assist the drug addicts with the legal drugs than letting them do illegal drug addiction. And besides, this will enable them, and other people to control or limit the use of those drugs. They, according to other people can help the country to monitor drug dealers for drug consumption control. Another stand here, science and technology have always the ability to improve the health conditions of the people who use the drugs. For instance, it is observed that some of these drugs are producing pleasant, euphoric, tranquilizing, sedative, stimulating, or hallucinogenic to the users. In contrast, these drugs, at the same time, can cause a total loss of concentration and sense of focus to any individual who use them. Large or little amount of consumption of these substances can still lead to isolation and permanent dependence of the users.

In view thereof, you also decide for yourself, is the legalization of the soft drugs beneficial to mankind? Or, can it only bring devastating effects to the lives of many people, especially to the young people in our society? Keep this in mind that most of the drug users nowadays are at young ages. Many children and teenagers are already capable of taking illegal drugs, what more if these illegal drugs would be legalized; they have more access of getting them without any effort at all. In the final note, people live in a society that supposed to protect the lives of their young children from any forms of harmful elements, and the legalization of any drugs leads many children to think that taking these drugs is not prohibited, so, it could be harder for the parents and educators to explain to them why they can not take it as well. Many families today have been ruined, as well as many young lives have been destroyed by drugs, and the bottom line here is the children are always at the lose end of this phenomenon. Whether the children are not taking drugs or drinking alcohol, but if their parents are drug-dependent or alcohol dependent does it make any good for them? The effects of drugs and alcohol are always negative to the children; whether they or their parents are using drugs. Children are the one who always suffer from the consequences of abusive parents, broken families, immorality, maltreatment, illiteracy and most of all poverty; and all these are caused of being drug dependent by so many people in the world.
