Note: for Goizueta Business School

How long have you known the applicant and in what capacity?

I have known Mr. Sugawara for the past five years and a half now upon joining the company. I am his mentor for the first three months of intensive programming training in the company and after the training, I become his mentor as he was deployed to the same department that I am involved in. I have seen him grow and see in him a good IT manager as we share hard tasks together at work.

What characteristics or attributes best describe the applicant?

Mr. Sugawara definitely has the passion and enthusiasm for learning. He is very ambitious and eager to acquire skills outside his current area of experience, and has a natural ability to acquire new skills and knowledge. He has studied and gained qualifications not only in computer science, but also in the area of finance. I am aware that he is also very active outside of work. He is the assistant coach of an amateur basketball team and is also involved in volunteer work helping the disabled through sport.

In what area is the applicant most exceptional?

He is most exceptional in terms of having excellent interpersonal skills and Mr. Sugawara works extremely well with others. He has the ability to cooperate closely with colleagues. Since being promoted to more senior positions, he has been given the responsibility of leading project teams and has shown a natural talent for leadership. He takes time to listen to the opinions of both the members of the team and his supervisors in order to reach a consensus about key aspects of the project. As a result of this, his leadership was a major factor in the success of the project.

In what area does the applicant need the most improvement?

Mr. Sugawara is generally a capable manager who listens to the opinions and ideas of the members of his team, and then works to create a consensus and that oftentimes takes him too long to coordinate the various team members when working on a project. My impression is that he tries too hard to accommodate the wishes of everyone in the team, which often leads to wasted time. I think that he needs to become more forceful in his management style and be less concerned about the feelings and wishes of team members who are unwilling to compromise.

How well do you feel the applicant handles disappointment or differences of opinion?

I feel that he handles differences of opinion in the sense that he can be a great organizer and good follower. I do believe that his most winning solution for differences of opinion is to accept idea of others. If concept and direction are fixed, he eagerly listens to others and converge their ideas to get along with main concept. If the idea of others is right one and far from a grand concept, he supports their ideas and negotiates supervisors to change the concept. In this way, he has kept the feeling of unity at work.

I am confident that he has the potential to become a successful business leader due to his maturity prowess and motivation in fulfilling his tasks and his ways in coordinating others to work well together. He is very eager to acquire skills outside his current area of experience, and has a natural ability to acquire new skills and knowledge. He is a veteran of international marriage with Chinese-Malaysian, sponsoring her wife, son, brother-in-law attending Japanese school and his mother-in-law. He is a volunteer basketball coach in Special Olympics, which support mentally disabled children to join the community through sports activities. I have no hesitation in recommending Mr. Sugawara for taking the MBA program in your institution.
