SUPERVISORS DUTY IN A DAYS WORK


 


      Supervisory position requires flexibility depending on the job and the company you will be assigned to. I was once a supervisor in SM Megamall Supermarket in Edsa Mandaluyong one of the largest and the one or the most popular store in Metro Manila and probably one of the most sophisticated stores I have work for. This store is a very huge catering a wide variety of items by section that you can choose from including fresh fruits, meat and vegetable, grocery items, food and non food stuff, beverages, snacks, gourmet and more.


      Customers will definitely enjoy the convenience of going to this store because of the low cost items and the great service being offered by the store personnel. Before entering the premise you will have to go to the back door if you are an employee, then checked and frisk by the security guard before entering the employees lodge, you can them prepare your uniform before entering the store proper. Ordinary employees are not allowed to wear jewelries, you will have to sew your pants pocket closed before entering the store and you will have to leave your belongings including cellphone, and wallet to the guard in replacement of a number to get back your things later during break time.


      Being a supervisor takes a lot of work and lot of responsibilities, but it is a fulfilling job to meet new people and customers every now and then, the challenges demand patients and lots of effort but fun and exciting. There are also times those participating companies will give you a reward for good sales beside from your daily wages. On the job, as a supervisor you will need to brief instructions to your staff to refill the missing product display, arrange the items and replace old stocks especially from the fish and vegetable section. Cashiers, merchandisers and stock clerks are not supposed to talk or chat during work hours, and this is the usual day of their work.


      Sometimes I will be the one to take the inventory for the newly ordered merchandise. Late deliveries are not allowed from various suppliers because they may take advantage of the precious time that the store would need their product, late delivery from supplier is a violation and a delay in sales. There are times that employees including the stock assistant and the company representatives may quarrel due to length and width of their product display but this is not the usual case they may be brought to the office to settle their differences or sometimes I will be the one to decide who gets the bigger space, and that would depend on the payment of their company.


      There are also customers query that may return a merchandise but  we make sure that the returned items really came from the store and that is really a bad order or damage, they will also need to present the duly paid receipt and if not, we may not be able to replace such returns. There are also promotions and free items inside the store including free sampling, free taste and free give-aways coming from sponsored company. This promotion is only available for the customers; employees will not be allowed to take advantage of such promotion.


      During the hour I make sure that all stocks are in its proper place, the employees are in their proper position, and most of all cleanliness in the work place is strictly implemented. There are also times that foreign customer would prefer to ask for their favorite product brand or they may have a hard time talking to the customer service, as a supervisor we see to it that they will be offered a substitute as good as their preferred brand, if not they will be the one to chose to buy or leave the store.


      There are many CCTV camera’s and civilian security personnel to lookout for thief. Usually person who is caught stealing will not be approach inside the store to eliminate any public disruptive incident but they will be caught when they get out of the premise. They will be confronted in the office to pay at least 10 times of what they have stolen or be brought to the police for proper assessment. In case of fire or untoward incidents there are many exits that can be used by the customers, we can say that security is highly prioritized in this store.    


      During break-time employees are not allowed to eat without a signed gate pass coming from a supervisor or manager, unfortunately employees are given a small paper that act as a gate pass that needs to be signed by the supervisor before taking a break. As usual before leaving the store premises we see to it that all the necessary merchandise are to be checked in good condition up until tomorrow, all the electrical switches are turn off to save electricity, although stocks from wet section may require 24 hour cold storage. Guards are roving 24 hours even the store is closed and most of the close circuit TV or CCTV are checked at night time. We checked all employees gate pass and go home. And this is the usual hard but fund days of work in my supervisory experience in this store.
