Methodology

This chapter will discuss the method of research to be used, the respondents of the study, the sampling technique, the instrument to be used, the validation of the instrument, and the administration of the of the instrument.

Method of Research to be Used

This study will use the descriptive approach.  This descriptive type of research will utilize interview, observation and questionnaires in the study.  To illustrate the descriptive type of research, Clamoring will guide the researcher when he stated: “Descriptive method of research is to gather information about the present existing condition.  The purpose of employing this method is to describe the nature of a situation, as it exists at the time of the study and to explore the cause/s of particular phenomena.[i]

This study will determine whether the performance of sports coaches has an effect on the development of the performance of its athletes.  Specifically, the study will describe the characteristics of an effective, responsible and successful coaches in terms of their experience as a coach, achievements and the field of sports they are engaged into, however, this has nothing in effect to the credibility of their perception regarding the roles of a coach; identify the problems they have experienced during their practice as a coach about the strategies, ethics or the response of their trainees; and their relations to their trainees ascertain their level of participation on the programs he/she has imposed.

The primary source of data will come from the information filled by the respondents randomly selected using the researcher-made survey questionnaires.

The secondary sources of data will come from published articles from sports publications, published sports and athlete’s periodicals, guidelines from Coaching Science Abstracts, and journals of organizations and groups offering coaching services.  Articles discussing a perception of a particular coach succeeding in his/her tract are also cited as a source, theses, research articles and related studies on the quality of a successful and effective sports coach and the different issues related to sport coaching practices.

For this research design, the researcher will gather data from the annual reports of the International Coach Federation, collate published studies from different local and foreign universities and articles from sports journals; and make a content analysis of the collected documentary and verbal material.  Afterwards, the researcher will summarize all the information, make a conclusion based on the null hypotheses posited and provide insightful recommendations on the responsibility of a sports coach to its athletes.

Respondents

The general population of this research is composed of sports coaches and their athletes regardless of their gender, age, achievements, year of practice and the field of sports they are engaged in.

Sampling technique

The researcher will use a combination of cluster and random sampling.  First, the researcher will formulate self-administered questionnaire containing 18 to 20 questions to be filled out by the athletes with information regarding specific coaches who trains them.  Another set of questionnaires will be prepared for the interview with the coaches themselves gearing towards their perception of the roles of a successful coach.

The researcher will then cluster the most popular sports in the country, and identify the two top teams.  From these teams, the researcher will pick randomly a number of athletes to fill out the questionnaires about the profile of their coaches according to their perception.

The respondents will grade each statement in the survey-questionnaire using a Likert scale with a five-response scale wherein respondents will be given five response choices. The equivalent weights for the answers will be:

Range                                                            Interpretation

      4.50 – 5.00                                        Always

3.50 – 4.00                                        Very Often

2.50 – 3.49                                        Often

1.50 – 2.49                                        Sometimes

0.00 – 1.49                                        Not at all

The researcher will also make an appointment for interview with them coaches of the selected teams to give way to their views on the role they play as the team leader.

Instruments to be Used

To fulfill the questions relayed for his study, the researcher will prepare a survey questionnaire, which will be given to the intended respondents.

The statistical formulae to be used in the second and third part of the survey questionnaire will be the following:

1.     Percentage – to determine the magnitude of the responses to the questionnaire.

            n

% = ——– x 100        ;           n – number of responses

            N                                 N – total number of respondents

2.     Weighted Mean

            f1x1 + f2x2  + f3x3 + f4x4  + f5x5

x= ———————————————  ;

                        xt

where:            f – weight given to each response

                        x – number of responses

xt – total number of responses
