OPD650 U5 Assignment Background The various regional business unit heads have created a document to clarify what is expected from the headquarters operations. (SEE DOCUMENT TITLED: EXPECTATIONS OF HQ STAFF)

The leadership team has asked you, as the key external consultant, to create a document describing which of the items from the list might be addressed through the following planned change projects they have decided to implement (based on your advice and help).

            1. Reengineering of the budgeting and business planning process.

            a. goal setting and overall corporate strategies

            b. resource allocation between HQ and regions and across regions

            c. meetings to review plans and progress to make changes as necessary

            d. metrics to use for consistent communication of business results

            2. Implementation of a new performance management and career planning system.

            3. Restructuring of marketing and sales operations at HQ into product based teams.

            4. Improving the relations between R&D and HQ marketing and Manufacturing operations.

They also want you to address any key items that cannot be tied to the projects they have committed themselves to create and implement. They expressed the following specific questions at the last leadership meeting you attended:

What else should we be doing?

What have we missed that we should attend to?

You have reviewed the files from all the work done so far and have identified the following:

            • The board has not yet addressed the performance of the president. Your access to the board has been reduced, and you do not know what they think of all the changes. The leadership team has not involved the board in any of its planning or decisions that you can see.

            • A CFO has not been hired.

            • Succession planning for the retirements of some key executives has not taken place. The leadership team is likely to undergo major change within the next 8-16 months.

            • Communication of the new structure of HQ and the regions has not started yet.

            • The team has been meeting regularly and is actively working on its commitments regarding teamwork behaviors, both as a group and each individual in the group.

            • The functions are not working together, even though the executive or leadership team is doing better.
