CSCI3418 Computer Graphics Assignment


This assignment is worth 30% of your overall module mark and is as follows:


Maurits Cornelis Escher (1898-1972) was a graphic artist.  He is most famous for his so-called impossible structures.  (See www.mcescher.com for details of his work.)


Your task is to use Pov-Ray to create a 3D scene similar to that represented in one of the Escher artworks selected from those shown on the following pages.  You are free to modify the original artwork provided you retain its style and spirit.  You should also colour your scene.


You should submit:


a)         A print of the Escher artwork that inspired you.


b)        A colour print of a single camera view of your 3D scene.


c)         A CD or 3.5 inch magnetic disk containing your commented .pov file, which should be named [yourname].pov.  There must be no other files on the disk except any necessary .inc files, if you use them.


d)         A report (max. 1000 words) detailing how your final image was created and identifying the graphics techniques used.


Your Coursework will be assessed as follows:




  • Quality of scene image                                                  -           8 marks




  • Range and sophistication of techniques used                  -           8 marks




  • Quality of commented .pov file                                      -           2 marks




  • Report structure and clarity                                           -           6 marks           




  • Report content                                                              -           6 marks




(Hints: Pay careful attention to report structure and remember that judicious use of graphics can save words.)
