British Airways and Virgin Airline


Introduction


 


            The aviation industry is considered as one of the most important industries in the world. It had offered different opportunities and advantages for many countries in order to enhance and improve other directly or indiretly related industries. This is the reason why there are different policies and standards that are being set and updated in order to improve the said industry.


            In the global aviation industry, British Airways and Virgin Airline are two of the most well-known brands or companies. These two companies are conisdered as leader in innovation and quality of services being offered to the wide and ever-changing demands, needs and preferences of huge globa travelers, businessmen and tourists. These two are taking advantage of the different opportunities and advantages which improvement in technologies, together with the changes in political, social and economic aspect or situation of the world.


 


Background of the Companies


British Airways


            British Airways PLC is the largest international airline in the world. It is based at Heathrow Airport in London, which is considered as the busiest international airport in the globe, and has a global flight network via different partners, like USAir in the United States, Qantas in Australia  and TAT European Airlines in France. Through its own operations and those of its alliance partners, the company serves 95 million passengers yearly by its 441 airports in 86 different countries with more than 1,000 planes (Funding Universe, n.d.).


            The earliest predecessor was Aircraft Transport & Travel, Ltd. was established in 1916. On August 25, 1919, the said company inaguared the first scheduled international air service in the world, with a converted de Havilland 4A bomber leaving Hounslow Airport for London and also Le Bourget in Paris. Eight days later another company, Handley Page Transport, Ltd., started a cross-channel service between Crickle Field in Londo as well as Paris and Brussels (Funding Universe, n.d.) .


 


Virgin Airline


            Virgin Atlantic Airways was founded in 1984. It has become the second largest carrier in Britain, which serves major cities in the world. It is currently based at both Gatwick and Heathrow airports of London, by operating long haul services to thirthy destinations world-wide as far apart, like Las Vegas and Shanghai (Virgin Altantic, n.d.).


            Virgin Atlantic is the quintessential Virgin story. It has every ingredient: the small newcomer taking on the giant and complacent establishment, the people’s champion introducing better service and lower costs for passengers with reputation for quality and innovative product development (Virgin Altantic, n.d.).


            The company was developed as an offshoot of Richard Branson’s Virgin Group, which was better known at the time as a leading light in the world of pop and rock music. On June 22, 1984, the first flight of Virgin to Newark took place, a flight filled with friends, celebrities and the media. The main aim of the airline is to provide the highest quality innovative service at excellent value for money for all classes of air travellers (Virgin Altantic, n.d.).


 


British Airways and Virgin Airline


            British Airways and Virgin Airline both focus on implementing strategies and techniques that will meet the preferences and demands of its clients. Both of the companies focus on the implementation of the Internet and other Information Technologies in order to improve the qualit of its service and connects with its global and wider customers. As a result, both of the companies have its website which enable their customers to look for different information and connect with the customers any time they want and need. They can look for information about the background and history of the company, at the same time, look for information about available flights or about promos or cheap travels. With this, it serves as a communication channel between the company and the current customers or possible customers. At the same time, it also enables both companies to focus on its internal customers or employees.


            However, it is important to consider that British Airways mainly focus on implementing high price than Virgin. With this, the two companies implement different strategies in terms of pricing. While Virgin focus on low cost but high quality services and travels, British Airways, due to its long history, its name and brand, it is implementing higher price than Virigin.
