Introduction

Nursing is a profession whose focus is to help the client to prevent, solve, alleviate or cope with problems associated with the activities he or she carries out in order to live. Nurses and midwives may perceive humans as having certain basic (e.g., food) and advanced (support) needs. On occasions, clients may be unable to meet these needs and staff may either assist them or teach them how to meet the needs in other ways or involve family members in meeting the person’s needs.

The pre-admission clinic nurse or clinician has the goal of providing direct client care. This kind of nurse accounts for the majority of practicing nurses. as health care returns to the home care setting, there are increased opportunities for nurses to provide direct care to clients at home without the client being admitted to the hospital. This scenario is also characteristic in hospitals wherein the client is not admitted to the hospital yet still receiving care from the nurse.
