THREE BROAD AREAS AND DILEMMA OF SOCIAL WORK

Social work is a noble profession their work includes helping people who are in need, they are always ready to serve towards improvement. Their profession requires humanitarian and social concern to strengthen people giving them hope and enriching their lives to live harmoniously in peace and goodwill. Not everyone can be a social worker because it may require patient and special skills to love the unlovable and to injure the problems of other. Sometimes they even need to sacrifice their time in order pursue changes in their clients life. Social work can be distinguished according to different field or broad spectrum areas.

One of the most popular areas of social work is the family and school social work. Conventionally they are the one who analyze the problems and situation of families that may arise these are unwanted condition or irregular events that took place within the family which is sometimes unbearable and no matter how much they try their solution doesn’t seem to work, they just can’t help but to ask for assistance in their situation. Family problems like divorce, children and parents dispute, living together, early pregnancy, sexual harassment in school, student retention and more. Social workers duty is to guide them through the whole process.

Social workers initiated their work in helping their clients as much as possible but there are certain rules and regulation they need to comply so as not to go overboard about their duty. These rules must be met and social workers must not exceed in their profession. These are like the usual ethical responsibility of a doctor about their patients. Social workers are expose to danger of aggravation when their client are harsh and intimidating, as being human they may be challenge to the limit of physical and verbal contact when disagreement heats up. Social workers must make sure that they can practice maximum tolerance toward work. They must make it clear that they can handle the psychological behavior of their clients or if not they may come back again later to settle down their emotions so as not to violate the dilemma that may arise.

Another area of social work is the mental health social work. Social workers may also help clients with mental problems, they are trained to handle basic treatment that may require, usually this are purely psychological, counseling and health practices types of social work. They can also help the family of the patient as a support group social working class. This kind of social work is usually based on clinics and hospital but they can also arrange a home based clientele for less severe patient for a more personal care. Again social workers are more exposed to danger, for example they are left with the patients.

There are mental patients records that show that they are abused by the social workers who are left alone in their rooms and they took advantage about the conditions of their patients, they are tempted to sexual abuse with their clients that degrade the morality and the dignity of social workers. Social workers who have been engage with this kind of activity will soon suffer the consequence of their action. Government will need to initiate a governing rule to punish social workers who have been violating the social workers code on conduct so as to eliminate untoward incidents that may occur.

Lastly, medical health social work with patients with chronic disease, including cancer, HIV, maternal problem etc. their duty is to help them cope up with their condition through encouragement and support. Clients and social workers can also make an arrangement to a home care if they want so as to give them a continuous conditioning and thereby give them strength and hope to cope up with their stressful and deadly disease. Social workers may not be medically capable of giving them the medicine but they can give spiritual and mental cure that is equally important like medicine.

Then again social workers may be exposed into another violation if they have violated another ethical approach in their duty. Sometimes social workers may take advantage of the condition and the trust of the family of the patients to ask more than they should have, or they may ask for monetary advances or material reward to their advantage therefore conflict of interest may arise. This is unfair social work practice, since they are free and open to the possibility to ask favor. These social workers are subject to disciplinary action or they may even be removed from their position.

Finally social workers should be reminded about their works and their reputation should not be compromised from the dilemma when faced with temptation, for they should be the role model of the society and not the prime violator of its noble work.
