HEALTH SYSTEMS MANAGEMENT IN AFRICA – HOW AFRICA PREPARE FUTURE HEALTH LEADERS
The healthcare industry will be more important for Africa in the next 25 years as it will continue to face multiple challenges regarding providing quality health care services. In Africa, there are several constraints that impede the delivery of health care such as disease burden; limited financing for health; weak health systems and lack of cohesion in sectoral policies; human resource crisis in the health sector; affordability, accessibility and quality health care service; poverty and health information systems. Combating these impediments as well as the implementation of new models for care delivery will require healthcare providers who have the educational foundation and the experience that prepares them to understand and navigate through these challenges.
As such, though it is recognized that Africa lacks in human resources, the necessity of honing future leaders centers the idea that future leaders should acquire a basic understanding of how health care systems in Africa are structured and functions; of the vital economic, financial, social, legal, regulatory, structural and policy issues that characterise African health care system and of the underlying operating principles that drives the health care systems in the country. Providing holistic and human-centered approach in responding to healthcare dilemmas, however, also requires the critical role of the African government in honing future national health leaders. The ability of the African government to tap on the residual human capital will be critical.
