Curriculum Planning in Education

The word “curriculum“ is a formal and informal content and process by which learners gain knowledge and understanding, develop skills, and alter attitudes, appreciations, and values under he auspices of that school (Doll, 1996 p15). This is the most useful to educators who wish to give great impact to the standard of teaching and improve student learning. In this event, curriculum planning is a personalized approach to curriculum development that provides critical information to the students in order to make their learning meaningful and effective as possible.   This educational process focuses on the student’s current levels of academic performance.  The educational team evaluates the ways and means in which every student and his or her environment as well as the communication interventions will give significant impacts to the student’s educational participation, learning and   achievements.   The family members as well must be directly take part in the educational planning for their children.  In this regard, a personalized curriculum planning heightens the development of communicative competence with AAC techniques, devices, and strategies.  In the same way, it includes curriculum on major subjects such as Reading, Math, Science, Social Studies, Physical Education and Visual and Performing Arts.  Likewise, it also deals with the specialized curriculum like current basic skills in communication and enhancing the abilities of the students to interact with their environment and in the society at large. It also teaches the students to give importance to their families as the basic unit of institution in the society.  The curriculum planning also stresses the importance of ongoing partner training that is required to support and maximize each students’ participation across life domains.  Also, it recognizes the essential roles of assistive information technology and communication partner training programs.

Furthermore, in order to apply effectively the curriculum planning in the instruction system of the schools; there must be a team work among the educators.  By assessing the student’s current levels and lead to specific goals and objectives; teachers can be able to monitor ongoing progress of each student academic performance.  Not only that, curriculum planning also establishes expectations for students’ levels of social and academic participation in the general education environment.  Hence, when the time comes that the student reaches the transition period, an advanced curriculum plan is readily designed for a higher level of educational settings and approaches.  In this way, students will be encouraged to join various productive activities that promote self-determination skills such as preferences and choices as they go higher level of education.  Subsequently, the role of parents and the entire members of the family are very crucial in determining the effectiveness of this plan to every student. In identifying people who have a strong influence so as to whom students have a long term-commitment; help them more to excel in brainstorming and effectively focus on the quality of life rather than trivial things around them. The word “curriculum” connotes a lot of meanings to everyone.  Parents may see it as “academic stuff” that their children do in school. Others may view it as teachers’ directions and student book activities that can be bought from any curriculum publisher.  On the other hand, educators use the term in different ways depending on their views and needs.

Correspondingly, the relationship between curriculum and instruction is so tight.  Curriculum is what the content of what is being taught of the teachers; while the instruction is being the detailed process of teaching and the way those curriculum plans are implemented to be able to teach the curriculum contents.  Therefore, these two always go hand in hand in order to maximize the student’s understanding and learning capabilities.  And, when planning for curriculum improvement, there must be bases that may be taken into account.  First is the institutional bases that include curriculum planning, planning domains, the characteristics of the school setting, the impact of present trends and issues and the utilization of the strategic planning.  All these bases affect people directly such as students, teachers; as well as their needs.  It similarly solves local curriculum problems, competencies of the planners and the internal and external factors in the school.

Subsequently, contemporary technology education relates greatly to the curriculum planning. The adaptation of new technology is one of the major contents of the curriculum planning.  This provides educators with adequate information on how to distinguish and implement a variety of curriculum designs. Nonetheless, if teachers acquire little guidance and information or receive little information about a technical curriculum design, then curriculum plans will not be as updated as it should be.  It is very important to note that through changing times, everything has changed innovatively, so as to the curriculum design of every school in order to go with the fast- pacing learning environment of today.
