The Effect of Parental Alcoholism on Psychosocial Well Being of the Children

Children who have brought up by alcoholic parents have the great tendency that their psychosocial well being is to be at risk.  Having alcoholic parents is a strong evidence of dysfunctional family environments that hinders the psychosocial development of the children inside the home.   Typically, this study is pointing out the problematic family condition and environments of many children with their alcoholic parents.  Most of the alcoholic parents have the large tendencies to family problems that include major illness of the parents due to excessive drinking of alcohol that may also eventually lead them to serious disease and eventually a cause of an early death.  Moreover, if the parents are already addicted to alcohol, there is less chances of performing their employment tasks effectively; and, a result is a termination from the job. In addition, there is a more likely family relationship problem that would arise between the parents as well as between the parents and the offspring and also between the off springs.    This is a chain of family communication conflict that would result to bigger problems among the family members in the near future.   In the same manner, there are many instances that the parents got divorced or separated due to alcoholism of one of the parents or even worst if both are alcoholic.  (http://allpsych.com/journal/alcoholism.html)

According to different studies, the measurement of the emotional and psychological stability and balance psychosocial well being of a child depends significantly on the behaviors of the parents at home.  Based on the theory of Velleman, 1992; it is revealed that children of alcoholic parents (COAs) will certainly inherit the bad habits and vices of their parents as they grow up.  Remember, that children are really looking up to their parents; they really expect their parents to be a good example to them in order them to avoid vices and bad habits.   The children would definitely feel the sense of belonging from the outside forces.  The children with alcoholic parents are more likely dependent to drugs; more often feel depression, agoraphobia which means unusual fright to wide open places, and crowds.  These children would not be able to control their social behaviors in the society.  At the same time, more likely to drug dependence, lower self-esteem. There is also an evidence of lower scores on tests in verbal ability as well as poor academic performance.  The worst thing is when these children will get married in the future; they are most likely the same with their parents.  They would inherit the alcoholism habit of their parents.  Likewise, these children have less patience and tact to keep their own families together.   There would be always dissatisfaction among their personal relationships with other people.  The same situation would tend to happen with their marriages.  And, many suicidal cases have been reported among children of alcoholism parents.   More than that, many bad attitudes will manifest to the children such as  very impulsive, get easily mad, tactless, social maladjustment, isolation, and compulsive behaviors.  (http://allpsych.com/journal/alcoholism.html)

Subsequently, alcoholism is a serious disease among people who can not refrain from excessive drinking of alcoholic beverages.  Actually, there is physical manifestation to know that a person is alcoholic; you can see physiological problems like hands shaking and blackouts.  Naturally, there are psychological problems of being obsessed to drink without limits.  Likewise, there are also behavioral problems that may affect to the working relationships with his/her colleagues.   Relatively, alcoholism may start from any age, regardless of background, economic status and social status.  According to Silverstein’s theory, 1990, alcoholism adversely affects highly intellectual people.  They are the people who lack proper motivation and self confidence.  Under those circumstances alcoholism can happen to anyone in the family.  Most of all, alcoholism can totally ruin the whole aspects of a family life as well as brings many harmful effects to family members in terms of  physical, mental, emotional and spiritual aspects of their beings.   Furthermore, alcoholism of a mother especially during her pregnancy can cause an adverse effect to the child even inside the womb.  It is reported that if pregnant woman drinks alcoholic beverage, the absorption of alcohol in her unborn baby’s blood system will be the same with her own.  This usually causes a Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS); which usually related to child deformities.  Treatment for alcoholism is not an easy process.  And, more often, it is not really successful for all the members of the family.  In case, there is one alcoholism case treated; there is still another members who are already affected and inflicted with alcoholism.  It may seem a cycle that needs a special attention and special long term treatment and therapy.
