Awareness campaign for nursing profession: the case of Egypt

Background and Literature Review

Nursing is vital component in every country’s health system even in Egypt as the increased awareness of factors affecting job satisfaction, nursing shortages and turnover in the nursing profession has led to the development of many creative approaches to the recruitment and retention of nurses respectively (MacRobert, Schmele and Henson, 1998).

It has been recognized that the Egyptian government documented the need for improving quality of university education standards and strengthening nursing education system to equip graduate nurses with knowledge and skills (Nursing Sector Committee Supreme Council of Universities). In line with international trends, availability of qualified and competent awareness campaign for nursing profession can be a key to delivery of quality nursing education in Egypt.

The advanced practice in nursing has become dominant focus of graduate nursing education over the past two decades and that nurses who not keep upgrading their skills will be leave behind by work place changes. Life long learning is the only answer for a competitive future.

The objectives will cater to:

-      Raise awareness of nursing profession campaigns fit into education based standards

-      Design cases of different types of nursing profession standards in Egypt

-      Develop academic reference standards

-      Disseminate awareness campaigns of certain to interest parties

-      Implement developed nursing profession references

-      Measure the efficacy of the awareness campaign

The aims of research study were to identify why awareness campaign for nursing profession is needed and essential for Egypt? The need to identify certain perception of community attitude towards the nursing profession and their opinion on the causes and manifestations of the attitude. Case study analysis will be at the center technique processed within survey questions  from such research focus for example, towards nursing profession quality that will help realize institutional mission more effectively and respond to expectations of accrediting organizations, community needs and other external  stakeholders  for accountability in such awareness standing in Egypt.

Roper et al. (1990) have stated that nursing profession demand understanding, respect, explanation, support and teaching, the activities require communication between nurses and patients. Developing constructive rapport is the foundation of successful nursing intervention. Thus, difficult to maintain standards as there is insufficient time to train and develop the new recruits. Furthermore, the cost of replacing and recruiting registered nurses from overseas can have substantial impact on any organization. This problem will persist until enough national nurses can be hired to staff all the country’s healthcare facilities

Methods

The nursing profession is developing rapidly although it still have long way to go, is considered one of the appreciated and recommended professions, survey questionnaire will be emailed to Egypt nursing colleges and associations, including: heads of Nursing Directorates in Ministries of Health; presidents of Nursing Associations or Unions; deans of Nursing in colleges and universities, ambassadors and the World Health Organization (WHO) Nursing regional consultant. Questions asked for information on the number of schools of nursing, number of university programs, levels of nursing education, number of graduates, working conditions, and the image of nursing in the country. Egypt offer masters level preparation. Egypt and Iraq are the only two Middle Eastern countries to offer doctoral level education in nursing. Most doctorate-level nurses in the Middle East are graduates of American or European universities.

Survey questionnaire will include the following sections:

-      general information: age, residence, academic class

-      motives for joining the nursing profession

-      perception of the community attitude towards nursing as a profession, and the reasons for and manifestations of that attitude

-      degree of satisfaction of the nursing students

Data will be analyzed using SPSS software and level of 5% was chosen to indicate significance.
