Note: for University

1. How long and in what relationship have you known the applicant?

I have known Mr. Takuya Sugawara for almost five years and a half now since he entered to the company, I became his mentor during his first three months of undergoing an intensive programming training and I believe that I am the most influential person for him with regards to work values and management development. We are on the same department and I have observed in him that he grows well being an IT manager as I seen him learn things relevant to our work. In our department, I have been the director for five years and for the past one year and a half, we have worked very closely with him and was engaged in a big project under my direction since He has joined in the company, we have been in the same department and he discusses with me about his dreams for future career so, I know how serious he is for making his own career to work.

2. Identify and discuss specific personal or professional qualities that you feel will distinguish this applicant from other capable applicants – first, during his or her tenure in the business classroom and next, in his or her continuing career in business management or other chosen field.

Thus, because of his excellent interpersonal skills, Mr. Sugawara works extremely well with others. He has the ability to cooperate closely with colleagues, both as a leader and as a member of a team. When he first joined our company as an Applications Developer, he showed strong teamwork skills while working on projects such as system modification due to the change of securities and exchange law. Since being promoted to more senior positions, he has been given the responsibility of leading project teams and has shown a natural talent for leadership. He takes time to listen to the opinions of both the members of the team and his supervisors in order to reach a consensus about key aspects of the project. I am confident that Mr. Sugawara has the potential to become a successful business leader due to his ability to analyze problems and decide on the required course of action, his motivation in fulfilling his tasks and his talent for leading by example and coordinating others to work well together. He is very ambitious and eager to acquire skills outside his current area of experience and has a natural ability to acquire new skills and knowledge.

First, during his tenure in the business classroom, Mr. Sugawara is very good at working with others and his skill in this area made me aware of his excellent management potential. This year, I assigned him to lead a team of six people in designing a new securities transaction system. He was able to help them update their skills by teaching them new programming languages and tools. He seems to take a mentor approach to leadership, which makes him a pleasure to work with.  Nonetheless, his leadership skills are progressing well, and he has the marks of a capable and effective leader. Because he takes his career and his responsibilities seriously, his colleagues look up to him. He communicates well with the staff members he works closely with, particularly the foreign staff, and he is respected for this as well. Next, in his continuing career in business management or other chosen field, he has shown his remarkable abilities not only in the workplace, but also as the vice president of the Daiwa Institute of Research basketball team. He has widely varied interests outside of work and a broad outlook on life.

3. If not already covered in your previous responses, give your observations of the applicant’s communication and interpersonal skills in dealing with peers, subordinates, supervisors and others.

Mr. Sugawara is a very effective communicator. He always tries to find the most efficient way to get his point across. For example, he made a template for certain routine e-mails that are required for regular jobs. This ensured that the necessary information would always be clearly communicated, and no details would be forgotten. When it comes to verbal communication, he expresses himself skillfully, but he is also an excellent listener. Because of the challenges he faced when he first started at the company, he can empathize with employees who are struggling and offer them helpful advice. In addition, he does not have a problem asking his boss for advice when he needs it. From this I assume that he is very comfortable and proficient at using English to communicate.

4. (OPTIONAL) Provide any additional information not mentioned elsewhere that you consider relevant in assessing this applicant’s potential for success in graduate business study.

For added information, when Mr. Sugawara has shown his remarkable abilities not only in the workplace, but also as the vice president of the Daiwa Institute of Research basketball team of more than 40 members. He has widely varied interests outside of work and a broad outlook on life. His ability to perform exceptionally at work and still pursue his own goals and interests shows that he has the potential to be a strong and independent leader.

I strongly recommend this applicant for admission to the McCombs School of Business at the University of Texas at Austin.
