THE ROLE OF MEDIA IN WAR

Media or mass media are groups of people that transfer communication through various inputs like Television, Prints, Radio, Internet and Multi- media. They can also be the press people on TV or news reporters on the field. Through this concept media management gives rise to a new meaning of its use, it has become very effective because it becomes more than a source of information it is a very useful tools for promotion and advertisement, weather, sports, world news, history and others. It is usually a perceptive tool to influence the action of the society and through its power it becomes the medium or a mediator of war to carry positive and negative news.

It can help people respect themselves or provoke a fight from various reasons and manifestations of war and those who are more powerful can largely use the media for their advantage to carry on in its side. The use of publicity is probably one of the most talked about form of a free art of media and politicians, business people and strategy of war has been using the media to populate their ideas and take advantage of situations to encourage people to believe about the news. Media can also play up people using black propaganda of war; Bin Laden’s death and its controversy lead their people and its organization to weaken by certain news that is positive on the world view but negative in their organizations.

Looking back on Saddam Hussein who uses media to show its power when they captured some American troops and killed them in front of Television so as to perceive that they are still strong. Media has also led the world through peace and orders after the deliberation of war, but media has been very popular they can also manipulate and handicap the situation to gain its control. They have the ability to exaggerate or conclude a wrong notion thereby carrying its side to promote goodwill on one side and take advantage of degrading the others. In today’s world the power of media cannot be overemphasized they have the ability to carry on the truth and whatever the media says in can be a confusion but usually most people believe that it is the truth.

In war, communication is one of the most important tools and media is the communicator. They can enhance the world and give them a more stable meaning just like rumors and gossip. The media in times of war should be careful about their reports or they may provoke people to rise and revolt in times of war and it cannot be stopped. During the war people depend on media that is why they are powerful. During World War 2 prisoners from various countries especially in Germany are not allowed access to the newspaper or radio. Anyone who was caught will suffer the consequence of death and that is the role of media they can give information to people to death and it is highly critical and risky on their part to view media because during world war, media is God. Even the troops of Hitler prevented the power of media during the war.

Media should be used as a tool for change or unity, they can act as a diplomat in the most critical situation if the participating parties that are on the rage and they no longer speak for peace and cease fire. Media can force themselves through their power to enter the barriers in the high risk of war because they have the openness of authority to be on both sides that is why even in the toughest battle of nuclear media is still there, during tough times media can create balance within arguments.

Media for reconciliation in the act of war, in the Philippines the days of dictatorship of President Ferdinand E. Marcos has passed and the first “People Power” of the world began when people march on EDSA highway in manila, that was way back 1986 when people gather together to oppose the government troops against electoral protest of the dictator’s overruling power living with 20 years of Presidency. People can no longer bear the fruit of his government of corruption and dictatorship, Marcos is ousted by thousands even millions of people by facing the military and holding each other’s arm as a human barricade to stop the war.

Priest and the society has given the military troops food, flower and rosary to end the war until most of their leaders and generals walk out in the command of the president to kill the masses. This has been the first ever people power revolutions of the world, media has been responsible to call the attention of the American government to intervene to end civil war before it even begin. And all these engagement of media still exists in today’s war within the context of cultural imperialism through colonial supremacy of powerful government of the world and media has been their tools to invade and capture the world.
