Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS)

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is a kind of lent virus that causes Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS).  This is a condition of human bodies that deteriorates or progressively weakens the T-cells of the immune system. In the same manner, it may also attack the cells of the brain, central nervous system, digestive system, lymphatic system and other parts of the body. Relatively, this will absolutely lead to life-threatening, complications and infections, which later on resulted to cancer; and eventually to death. Furthermore, HIV is considered pandemic by World Health Organization. And, any complacency about the disease may result to the increase of HIV risk.  In view thereof, AIDS has killed more than 25 million people worldwide; as well as HIV has infected 0.6 % of the population around the globe. People with HIV-1 subsequently develop AIDS. They mostly died  from various infections or malignancies which associated with the continuous malfunctioning of the body immune system.  HIV progresses to AIDS within 10 years of HIV infection, there are other people who experience the AIDS symptoms earlier than it is expected, and there are some that take much longer years before experiencing the symptoms of AIDS.  After HIV progresses to diagnosable AIDS, the life expectancy of the patients is more than 5 years.  But, it may become lesser, without anti-retroviral treatment.  Someone who has AIDS usually dies within a year, if he or she does not receive antiretroviral therapy.

As a matter of fact, HIV is a transmitted disease which is responsible of long-duration of illnesses with a long incubation period. Lent virus of HIV is transmitted from one person to another. Additionally, the main symptoms of HIV infection generally when there are already bodily fluids in the body of the infected person.  During primary infection, the level of HIV can reach several million virus particles per milliliter of blood. In this period, a person may experience 2-4 weeks post exposure, and most of  the individual acquire or develop influenza or acute HIV infection.  Moreover, the most common symptoms of HIV are , high fever, lymphadenopathy, pharyngitis, rashes,  myalgia, malaise, mouth and esophagus sores, headache, nausea, vomiting, enlargement of liver or spleen, weight loss and neurological problems.  In this connection, the virus typically stays in the blood stream, and it normally transmitted through sexual intercourse with a person who has HIV infection.   The vaginal or anal intercourse, as well as oral sex without using condom may lead to quick transmission of the virus from one another.  Aside from that, infected medical tools such as drug injection, needles, etc. person definitely infect more the person who will use again the infected devices.  Equally important is to take extra precaution in undergoing blood transfusions; many cases of AIDS are from infected blood products used in the treatment of certain diseases such as hemophilia.  Correspondingly, many children have been also victimized by HIV; virus from their mother is transmitted to them through pregnancy, childbirth and breastfeeding.  In addition, organ transplantation from HIV infected donors is also one cause of acquiring HIV and AIDS. In contrast to what people believe, HIV and AIDS are not transmitted from one person to another through a casual contact, as long as there is no blood or body fluids   passed from one another.

However, to prevent getting Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and Acquired Immune Deficiency (AIDS); one should  be extra careful of preventing blood, semen, vaginal fluids, or breast milk of a person who is infected by HIV or AIDS.  Additionally, people must be aware of the health risks of being polygamous, and having multiple sexual partners.  In case, there are sexually transmitted diseases like herpes, gonorrhea and   Chlamydia must be given immediate treatment to avoid further complication that may lead to HIV and AIDS.  The use of condoms is recommended for safe sex.  HIV and AIDS are adversely affected to our society at large; in fact, these diseases are big burden to the poor families whose one of the members is an HIV or AIDS victim.  This is a devastating condition in terms of financial and morale concerns. This is the main reason that many private organizations together with the different government sectors have been working hand in hand to reduce the HIV and AIDS cases and mortality rate   in many countries throughout the globe.  Having HIV or AIDS have great impact to different areas in the society; first to the family and the household, especially if there are children involved; it will create great financial losses to the family for the medications and treatment of the patient.     In the same way, work places are also affected, if   few of the employees are HIV infected, because he or she will be less competent for the job. HIV and AIDS will cause significant loss to the economy at large.
