Brain Development for Young Children

Background of the Study

During development, the brain undergoes a highly complex series of processes at different stages. Any interference–for example, from toxic substances–that disrupts those processes can have permanent consequences. This vulnerability lasts from fetal development through infancy and childhood to adolescence. Various researches has shown that at low levels of exposure, environmental toxicants such as lead and mercury can cause subclinical but still important adverse effects, such as decreases in intelligence or changes in behavior. The development of the brain is important to develop the senses and intelligence even for the small children and new born. However, there are 200 other chemicals that are known to be toxic to the human brain are not regulated to prevent adverse effects on the fetus or a small child. The lives and brain development of a child can be affected by the toxins if the family lives in a place wherein there is a nearby chemical industry. Based on the previous study done in the industrialize countries and the exposed of the rural areas with the lead from gasoline, there may have reduced the number of IQ scores above 130 (considered superior intelligence) by more than half and may also have increased the number of scores of less than 70. This leads to a serious threat on the future of the children and might cost more funds coming from the government to cover both the loss and investment in quality education in the years to come.

Statement of the Problem

Upon reviewing the background of the study, there are two associated problems recognized:

·         What are the essential things that a child should develop mentally according to his/her age?

·         What is the importance of brain development?

Research Aim and Objectives

The main aim of the study is to investigate the brain development for young children particularly within the 8-10 months old. In order to facilitate the investigation there are objectives that should be considered. First is to determine the brain development of children based on the medical studies. Second is to address the differences of children and their development. Third is to recognize the perception of the parents, especially the mothers about the development of their children. And fourth is to learn the strategies in order to achieve the normal brain development of children that will greatly affect their future growth.

Research Questions

There are four questions that can help the researchers in investigation:

1.      What are the ideal signs on the brain development of children based on the medical studies?

2.      What are the common differences of children and their development (e.g. genius qualities)?

3.      What are the perceptions of the parents, especially the mothers about the development of their children?

4.      Are there any strategies in order to achieve the normal brain development of children?

Literature Review

The need for continuous support to both children and families has been emerging in different nations. The focus is ensure Children’s successful development. It promotes the importance of health development, cognitive development, and social emotional development, and highlights the incredible changes that take place in the first few years of life. Therefore, many parents, educators, policymakers, and others are encouraged and who can influence the lives of young children. The study of child development as it relates to social policy development has become an important discipline, enriched by contributions of scholars and practitioners from fields ranging from developmental and clinical psychology, pediatrics, and medicine to law, sociology, anthropology, and education. However, the beginning of the development of children should start at an early age. On the other hand, the involvements of the harmful materials like toxins during the development of the brain; there is a great chance for the delayed brain development of a child. Other harmful consequences from lead exposure include shortened attention spans, slowed motor coordination, and heightened aggressiveness.

Methodology

The proposed method in the study is the combination of qualitative and quantitative study. The primary method is through the use of the survey and the participants are the mothers who have a child between 8-10 months. They will answer a questionnaire regarding their observation on their children. On the other hand and to support the findings, the collection of secondary information is also considered. Through the use of the previous research studies, the study can relate the current findings and analyzed it thoroughly based on its aims.
