COUNSELING ADVOCACY OF SOCIAL WORKERS

      Counseling is a noble profession where social workers advocacy is to develop humanitarian, peace and goodwill community through social concern strengthening the spirit of family, self worth, dignity, morality and other social issues. Social workers devote themselves to visit the community all year round to give hope to poor and to less fortunate individual that makes them respectable and compassionate to those in needs. Although counseling is different from social works, Social Workers can also be great counselors because of the experience they have gained through the years of helping actual people who are suffering social dilemma.

      Government may back them up for financial aid while some non government organizations may support their advocacy. They are taught to handle people with different problems and situation and they treat the people in all walks of life respectfully, individually they may set aside their time to dedicate to other people, they may even be the source of strength to other people. In spite of all their works they sometimes do not receive a regular salary because some of them are volunteers. They can be the unsung heroes of the society.

      Besides helping people Social Workers are also expert in counseling and giving advices, they are trained to understand hostility of people to tame them and to listen to what they say without force, although they may fail sometime in negotiation they still prove their worth through openness. Social workers may use different approach in counseling, their usual concerns is outdoor community related services rather than office walk in client counseling. They may be the one to visit targeted prospect in times of need. Social Workers counseling strategy requires a practical analysis of the problem that is why they uses less rational but emotional approach to their target audiences, they may even express personal commitment and service without restriction of sympathy and love although this is not a usual scenario.

      Counseling and Social works is also an art or profession that requires mastery to qualify for this is not an easy job, exposing themselves to people and handling their problem in a varying degree of affluences and different behavior stage. Their counseling practices, theory and techniques changes according to situation but basically the following approach are open used;

      1. Studying the area or geographic location, culture and behavior of people for a group counseling in order to distinguish and allocate their budget in specific program if any. For individual, they will research the background of the client if possible through their neighbor’s initiative before counseling. This will give them an advance plan of action and collective approach in solving ones problem.

      2. Establishing trust is done when counselor or social worker and clients finally meet. Not much formal intervention but a simple handshake or smile and an open communication must be established which is the first and foremost concern to bridge the gap of the client and thereby proceed to the discussion or counseling the proper approach which is the most important part the entire course.

      3. If a trust has been initiated then the real work begins. The Social Workers may start with the normal light questions or conversation which the counselor may already prepare for, since they have already researched the prospects personality in advance. If the client is responsive enough they will continue to start a heavier question and a series of test and psycho-therapeutic counseling approach in a varying degree to assess the capacity of the client.

      They may encounter different problems like drug related, family problem, suicidal thoughts, relationship problem, health issues or even school problems etc. each of this have a different approach and solution accordingly. Some techniques like drawing or playing is more popular to a child, role playing or modeling is for teen-agers while a more serious discussion may be required for adult. By this time the Social workers counseling approach has been taken one step further to transition and recommendation which will finalize the success of their performance.

      4. The final transition or ending process when finally met will give them time to celebration or unification. If for example the child run away from their parents and decided to return with the help of the social workers and they have been settled. The social workers will then design a measure to bring back their love through bonding activities and social intervention including a time to watch a new show or an outdoor play, a gift from parents and even a simple hug with a promise of love that will last.

      Before leaving, the social workers will make a compromise agreement between parties set with respect to each other to help them remember an abundant worry free family life. This will give closure to the job of the Social Workers and celebrate for their success.
