ARTICLE: Economic Globalization and Equity in East Asia


Title:  The title definitely grabbed my attention because being knowledgeable of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) myself, I became interested about what the author’s point of view regarding its impacts in South East Asia especially in Brunei.


Abstract: The abstract of the paper was able to give me an excellent overview of the topic that it really made me excited to read on and on. The abstract was short but concise.


Structure: The paper was able to provide an enthusiastic and creative discussion of FDI as a direct benefit of globalization. It was highlighted by the fact that more often than not, small countries in Asia don’t really have the capabilities to implement FDI. Instead, these countries in Asia engage in activities that various schools of economics typically associate with foreign direct investment. These activities include the trading of products, product development, production and distribution.


Literature review: The literature review was definitely critical and accurate. The author gave the readers a comprehensive review of globalization and FDI where. The author basically pointed out that foreign direct investment deals with all operations done within countries. Activities such as the management of purchases, the control of inventories, logistics and evaluations are often related with foreign direct investment. A great deal of emphasis lies on the efficiency and effectiveness of processes. Therefore, foreign direct investment includes the analysis and management of internal processes within countries.


Model development: The article utilized both the theoretical and empirical models. In this article, the concepts of political situation, globalization and taxation systems were utilized by the author in order to support his observations.


Data: The data were given special details through graphs and charts like for example, FDI indicators of economic openness. The information that could be deciphered from these statistical presentations become valuable as the reader continues to understand the paper.


Results: The results were also explained through graphs and charts as well as observations of the author.  


Conclusions: There were clear conclusions. For example, the author concluded the creation of restrictive FDI policies, commercialization, and protection has been a significant source of comparative advantage of South East Asian economies and a major driver of their competitive strategies. Indeed, these countries are fully aware of the pressing need for a long-term policy commitment to collectively transform their FDI policies into one which is largely based on knowledge, driven by innovation and sustained by the active participation of all major sectors.

Content: The paper utilized both advanced theory and empirical method as far as presenting the contents of the paper. The concepts of political situation, globalization and taxation systems were utilized by the author in order to support his observations


Application: The results of the study are definitely useful in the sense that problems involving globalization impacts and FDI were solved in different ways and alternative solutions were then relayed to the government. The government can then select the appropriate course of action in line with their objectives, actions and goals.


Policy: Policy implications of the paper include the pledge of South East Asian nations to work together to help accelerate the pace and scope of policy formulation, commercialization and protection; to improve the regional framework of FDI policies and institutions, including the development and harmonization of enabling monitoring and evaluation systems; to promote cooperation and dialogues as well with the country’s organizations; to strengthen FDI related human and institutional capabilities in the country, including fostering greater public awareness of issues and implications relating to its FDI.


Presentation: The author used economic terms and theoretical concepts all over the discussion in order to assert his points.


Diagrams: Diagrams were used in the paper to help in the presentation of statistical data.


Length: The contents of the paper were just enough to explain comprehensively the merits of free markets and consumers.


Stimulation: As a person knowledgeable in FDI, I was definitely interested in the paper as I went along reading and understanding the points of the author.
