The Developmental Stage of Young Adulthood

Different individuals have acquired unique personalities and   human experiences as they grow older. There are individuals who are good in adjusting and adapting their new environment and there are others who are not.  There are some people who are very good in adjusting to other peoples’ behaviors but there are some who have difficulty to mingle with other people. Some individuals have positive outlook and there are few who do not have the same thinking.  What else?  Many of us are emotional, but there are also who are not emotional at all.  Some are independent, but there are huge numbers of individuals who are dependent.  There are individuals who have potentials to become a leader; in contrast there are people who prefer to be just follower or subordinates.    Most of these personal traits are innate and some are being learned and adapted from the people around us and from the environment that we live in. All these factors are deeply related to the development of young adulthood of a person.    Specifically, the development of young adulthood of a person begins from adolescence period.  During this stage, self image development is beginning to start out from 12 up to 18 years old.  In this same manner, relationship with other people gradually grows. If the person is being successful in developing his emotional aspect during this stage; it will lead him or her to a more colorful and happy life.  But, if the person is not successful in developing these personal aspects of his being, this will cause a serious isolation and distance from the majority of people in his environment.

Actually, many young adults gradually experience different changes in terms of physical, cognitive, psychosocial and emotional aspects of themselves. In fact, the first remarkable developmental stage during young adulthood is the physical change during adolescence period. The biological transition of adolescence or puberty is the most significant sign that adolescence period has started.  In this stage, an individual is already capable of sexual relationship and sexual reproduction.  This puberty stage shows more physical maturity among the growing girls or boys as they transform from childhood to adulthood. According to psychologists puberty stage is the most difficult period among young people because this is the stage where they are determining their real identity.  This is also the primary reason that teenagers’ social and emotional development must be properly developed; in order for these young people to have an appropriate and positive self-esteem and self-identity.  By this way, they will have self-assurance and confidence in everything they do.  This is also the stage for them to develop positive attitudes towards their environment and towards the people around them.   (http://psychology.jrank.org/pages/14/Adolescence.html)

The other element that is affected by the developmental changes among young adults is the cognitive aspect.   The cognitive transition refers to the changes in the ability of a person to act or think in a more advanced and complex   manner.  This is a mental process among young adults to perceive, recognize, and conceive and to reason out in accordance to what they feel, see and experience along with the people  around them  and the things that they see in their environment.  During this stage, these young people are more conscious of what other people think and feel about them.  The young people usually thinks and reasons out in a more logical and ideological ways.  This is also the stage wherein they   have begun to be interested in interpersonal relationships, politics, religion, philosophy and moral aspects of being an individual.  In the same fashion, teenagers tend to be relatively argumentative especially to their parents over matters that they strongly believe right and just.  This aspect is the most exasperating part in dealing with the adolescents because they tend to be more firm persistent as well as aggressive on their decision-making.

Moreover, the last important element that changes during young adulthood development is the psychosocial aspect of a person. During the adulthood developmental transition, as the teenage children going through phases they tend to become adventurous and act as if they were really matured individuals.  Many teenagers like to assume different roles and love to acquire independence from their parents.  Just like many young people who are very seldom talk their parents about their personal problems.  They are more at ease to open up with their peers or friends for advice.   In addition, during this stage, these young people prefer to spend most of their times with their friends especially with their boyfriends or girlfriends.  In this connection, many parents have dilemmas in dealing with their children during this transitional stage, however, the fact still remains clear that each one of us have gone through this stage once. It is a matter of giving trust to our children to let them become what they really want, and let them enjoy the transitional stage with constant guidance and love.
