TEACHING LISTENING STRATEGIES

In this article we are going to study the listening strategy of one of Calico journal volume 7 with the title “Interactive audio strategies for developing listening skills” and how effective this journal recommendation would be if used in teaching or creating teaching methods and strategy. According to the journal this interactive audio focused on the following comprehensive learning ability of the listeners including; vocabulary recognition, transcribing text, paraphrasing, predicting discourse etc.

This Interactive Audio may also be used for people who have disability in hearing that can be played on CD’s, DVD’s and Computers. Being a form of media this kind of medium is best used by teachers in school so that teacher could easily find time to focus on the reaction and students ability in comprehension and listening skills rather than talking all day. This kind medium is an easy listening guide and ease of use for both teachers and students. Upon using the audio students will be forced to listen since they know that it will be played for a relatively shorter time. And if students do not understand a single lesson, the teacher can simply replay the medium.

On the other hand this type of medium is also good for home study program since children and students can replay the audio at home. A great teaching method brought about by technology. The Education Technology (EdTech) is the one who has been responsible for creating such audio products, they made sure that the audio is complete and applicable depending on the needs of students of various level. Included in this audio is a workbook of activities so that students and listeners can assess their listening comprehension skills from listening to actually speaking the lessons they have learned. This audio lesson is adaptable as templates to create proto type activities generating various lessons in hard copy so that they can also read as well. Teachers and students do not have to be intelligent in computer to use this audio series it can simply be like an ordinary audio CD.

When using a computer it can simply be put on to the CD-ROM and it will take you an auto-run or you can simply choose to install the product which is an easy thing to do. You can simply choose a topic like vocabulary recognition so that students and listeners can identify easily by using the most common words that you have to go through.

Discover Paraphrases is another lesson so that student and listener upon listening can develop the idea and be able to identify the parts and stages of each main idea of activities. Upon using the computer they can read and click on the screen to visualized the idea in a more complex manner, audio visual is more effective than audio teaching methods but student with impaired hearing ability can also interact with the computer since there are numerous software’s that can create audio instruction.

This audio CD has a listen and type functionality test that makes it even more appealing to students so that they can interact directly to computer immediately without the needs for additional note taking but the actual stuff. If ever the student needs to repeat, they can easily take again the test upon finishing the audio CD. In the most recent forms of these types of CD some even have a grading system to easily evaluate and assess the student’s performance right there and then using this medium.

Predicting discourse can also be included in this series; a student may hear such words or phrase and add another idea or choose among the selection for example: Anna went to town to 1. Buy some food 2. Cook some food 3. Eat some food. From this exercises they can predict and analyze the situation and later give reasons about their answers. Or for example a reported would tell some news like “the weather would be fair and cloudy” the day is expected to be…” students can add or predict additional situation. When using the CD on the computer will be much easier since the student can simply select the answers.

One of the most challenging features of this audio CD is the Transcription or dictation features that the student would need to follow and type in the words set by the CD to follow along in the class. Students listening skills will definitely be challenge through speed and accuracy.

In Summary the listening and thinking pattern of the students will likely be harnessed and they will enjoy the process of this strategy. For teacher they have discovered another teaching method; however the actual interaction of teacher to student should not be replaced with this kind of strategy but will serve as a tool to accompany them to more versatile forms of teaching.
