Industry-Specific Use of Information Technology


Introduction


The use of information technology within the internal system of an organization became popular and now is widely used. Because of the efficiency and accuracy of the information and the process, the organizations can gain advantages in their industry. In the use of information technology, websites are the commonly used software which both HSBC and Ford Motors successfully run.


HSBC


HSBC is one of the leading banking systems that are operating globally. Through the international network that is linked with the advanced technologies, the HSBC can provide the wide range of financial services, corporate and investment banking, and many others (HSBC Holdings Plc., 2009). The use of a specific technology or machine serves their credibility in providing quality service if the information is fresh and/or updated. The technologies that acquired by the organization are the kind of machines that enables the customer information transformation. However, the firms in the global competition are experiencing the non-technological challenges that lead to their failure in informative system. The organization, HSBC, recognize the changes in the tradition mainframe environments within the IT. The design of the mainframes is based on the theories of summarizing or averaging the information gathered. This practice in technology conserves time and is more efficient (McKean, 1999). The design of the electronic banking system of HSBC have the advantage in delivering the ability to work with multi-bank balance and transaction, therefore, its capabilities can be more flexible that the other system. In the application of the system, for example, the accounts-receivable management services that streamline the collection process and improve cash flow. It can supply comprehensive information on receivables and details of intra-day cash positions (Platt, 2004).


Ford Motors


The automaker, Ford Motors Company traced the success through the use of its Information Technology and this includes in the magazine, Computerworld “100 Best Places to Work in IT”. This emphasized the commitment of the company to deliver the innovation and technical excellence. The hybrid cars that had been part of the competitive advantages of the company is said to be the result of the thorough utilization of information technology. With that, the people with varying skills and mastery in the art of IT are hired and be part of the organization. To enhance the capabilities, the company’ training and development programs, advancement opportunities, and others are provided. Ford is one of the leading manufacturers that are recognized involving working with the latest technological advances which resembles the ability to compete with the other brands (MediaFord, 2003). Because of the acquired knowledge in IT, Ford has produced some of the most powerful engines that range in various sizes and configuration. Ford engines also have some unique characteristics that suits in the users need or application.


The Websites


In the transition of business sectors in the call of globalization, the use of information technology enables them to find new ways to communicate with the public that can be used for their long-term success. Websites are said to be the right tools to execute the organization’s agenda. In the marketing department, communications efforts are mostly conducted with very limited resources. On the other hand, the efforts to public relations can be critical in terms of deploying the message in any parts of the world. The turn of the organization to move forward with various opportunities and communications might take time, but with the use of websites as an interactive communication, the information and innovation can be gained and part of the organizations’ journey to gain success. Website should contain the mission of the organization which is important to create attention to the viewers and potential customers. Not all businesses have the same interactive or online needs and we needed to set forth our goals on the front end in order to succeed in a confined budget. The objectives of the organizations should thereby address and can be essential parcel for the success of an organization in interactive communication (Craig, 2003).

HSBC and Ford Motors, although different in the type of industry, still manage to be on top among their competitors. In the long-term practice of the company in their information system, the powerful customer approach tremendously delivered the changes that lead to develop more efficient information system. All of the fruitful efforts significantly created impacts in the areas such as the marketing, sales, service, and customer-loyalty. Therefore, the processes towards the information system remain the central power of the firm, enabling them to participate in the global competition.
