Structure for essay:


 


Introduction


Point 1 –   (example point)   Both central characters are similar because they both long to rebel against authority.


Sub-points:


              


                A  Both men rebel against religion. (You would then explain this point using 3 lots of evidence from each text and many quotations, comparing both texts, as with all sub-points.)


                 B Gideon being a hypocrite and Faustus is a show off.


                 C  Both men want to be associated with the devil.


Point 2  (example point)  Both men appear individuals in tragic situations.


Sub-points:


 


                A    Both men end up isolated.


                 B  both men are destined for tragic endings (don’t see warning signs of their activities)


                 C  They both never achieve their full potential.

Conclusion


 


 


Say it like… James Robertson intends to…. Or Marlowe portrays Faustus here….


For each sub point choose 3 pieces of evidence from Gideon Mack and Dr Faustus to illustrate the point.


You could talk about Faustus being a renaissance man and pursuing the devil for knowledge.


Gideon rebels against his father-incident about TV (he watched batman) and Gideon does not believe in God?


Both men go against what they represent.


Every paragraph has to refer to Faustus and Gideon.


Include page numbers of quotations used and set quotations in essay like they appear in the text.


The essay must be packed with quotations! At least 50 quotations!


The essay is all about comparing the two characters.


Close text analysis should be used on quotations.


Comment on structure of text, if imagery is used, repetition or other devices by writer etc, and the effect it has upon on the audience.
