Can computer improve human lives?

The contribution of technology has made to modern life is greatly positive, helping to improve the quality of human lives. However, there are also adverse effects as technology is increasingly out of human control. Nonetheless, the task of technology is to create better living for the people hence the intentions are positive unless we are going to look at technology in the perspective of destruction, warfare and terrorism wherein technology acts as a catalyst. Computers improve the quality of the lives of the people in different, unimaginable ways.

For one, because computers improve the way people communicate with each other, it became relatively easy for us to create and achieve knowledge (intelligence). Such knowledge is the foundation of the most profound discoveries in human history. Scientific discoveries in the past 150 years, for instance, had changed thoughts, attitudes and paradigms as to what technology meant to a society that constantly changes. Telephone, photography, automobile and airplane were invented, changing the ways what people viewed as once absurd ideas.

Because of the utilisation of newly created knowledge, it is now possible to learn, grow and ‘interact’ through computers. Diverse information are inexistence that could have taken days or weeks or longer to discover if you have to discover by browsing and searching through different sources and locations. To leverage information-searching online, one can also attend school online. This is aside from the more conveniences that computers can provide to traditional learning process. Advances in technology help students in learning like for example the use of projectors and video conferences had helped students to learn qualitatively (content) and quantitatively (volume of information). On the other end of the spectrum, teachers are also being benefited by computers wherein updated information are  immediately available online whereby these information are infused into a lesson, making the teaching process more related to real life situations for the students.

Multi-tasking is now also possible wherein an individual can chat with others in geographically dispersed locations while also doing banking online or booking online. Sharing is evident wherein individual are enabled to share whatever work s/he has created as images, videos and songs among others with other users, building a virtual community in the process. Humans own the process by creating communicative experiences with other people of the same interests. Deliberation and exchange of views, opinions and suggestions are achieved, creating new information as well through individual inputs.

Other than this, computers are a form of entertainment where an individual can watch videos online and listen to all sorts of music. Any individual can be given an opportunity to write a poem, a story, a book, a script; to create a full-feature movie; or to compose music one likes. Sorting the ideas, computers can add aesthetic value to the creation. All the while, an individual can create a virtual storage in the form of a website, a personal account or a blog whereby creations can be stored, and be shared with others if s/he wants to.

On a broader scale, computers improve the lives of the people by helping commercialism. Different firms are provided with the incentive to invent – or systematically applying organised knowledge and information, providing solutions to the problems. Inventions are now considered the objects of trade. For instance, mobile firms are continuously rolling out new and diverse mobile phone models, ones that are equipped with Wi-Fi, organisers and supported by different audio and video formats. Computers thereby are not only enhancing our communicative experiences but also support the improvement of other communicative tools such as the mobile phones among others.

In sum, the benefits of computers for the human are immense and immeasurable. Nevertheless, there lay different dangers when used improperly. Having said this, computers can be only beneficial when used in more appropriate ways and destructive when not. Because it has knowledge and information at its foundation, there is also a danger of misinformation and the abuse of control of information basically because humans have the capability to do so.
