From the Employee’s Perspective: Effect of Working and Schooling Simultaneously on Work Performance


Introduction


The employees are expected to finish their respective courses to gain their academic credentials. It is essential for every employee to have their own foundation of learning, not only to help their employers or the entire organization but rather, for their own growth as an individual and on their career. It is a very good start for an employee to have his own background regarding the nature of his work in an organization because it can definitely give him the edge to compete within the organization. Having the academic knowledge, skills and other working capabilities are such great advantage for the organization because it is the most influential factor in improving the performance at work. 


Background and Problem Statement


From the perspective of an ordinary employee, harnessing the knowledge and skills before the deployment is the most important factor that should take place. However, there are instances that learning and working are coming together. Because of the tight situation in the area of employment, many people chose to work while learning. The arrangement is based on their own assessment and schedule. For example, because of the combination of work and learning, an individual often choose to divide his time in working and learning. It can be work in day and school at night (or vice versa), and it can be also working on weekdays and schooling in weekends (or vice versa). It is believed that because of these arrangements can create a significant influence on their work and generate an impact in an individual’s performance at work.


Research Aim and Objectives


The aim of the study is to decode the various effects of simultaneous schedule of an individual towards attending the school and committing in work. It is directed that there is evidence regarding the work performance as an effect of the division schedule and commitment. To support the investigation of the study about the simultaneous attendance on school and work, there are three objectives that are bound to give details according to the employee’s perspective. First is to create an impression regarding the division of commitment of an individual, such as detailing the benefits and drawbacks that it can create. Second is to provide the effects that this division of responsibilities might bring in both school and working organization. And third is to emphasize the impacts that it may create in the individual’s performance towards their work.    


Literature Review


A job taken by someone who is still attending the school and other reasons has a great impact in working for small number of hours (Kalenkoski and Pabilonia, 2007). The non-regular employment or part-time employment is based on the arrangements attributed particularly to the worker itself such as the age, gender, education, marital status, etc. The employment contracts can be different to the other employees because of the various priorities that the certain employee needs to attend or the limitations that can prevent him in performing and contributing well in the organization. Part-time employees are more expected to give more effort in the organization that the regular employees which may arise the issue of discrimination and unequal employment treatment. There are many reasons behind the interpretation of the working performance of an employee, but since a part-time job receives that same amount of employee benefits and/or incentives, meanwhile the employment compensation is relatively low, still there is no assurance that the performance delivered by the part-time employee is in the level of quality. In addition, the first groups of individuals that will experience the changes are the group of part-time employees. Because they are flexible workforce, when the time comes that a firm chooses to cost-cut the manpower, the non-regular workers are surely at stake (Keizer, 2008). However, it is advised by most of the schools particularly in college level to get their own set of job according to their taken course. Having a part-time work delivers a work experience and even helped the students to secure their jobs in the future (UKCES, 2009).


Methodology


The suggested method in the study is the use of the survey and interview as the primary source of information. In the investigation of the study regarding the division of commitment of an individual in work and study, it is essential that the first inquiry will reach the concerned people. At the first phase of the study, survey will be implemented among the population of individuals who are engage in work-and-school commitment. In this stage the researcher/s can determine the various influences impacted in the working performance of an individual. In the second part, the interview will be conducted on the managers or supervisors and will ask about the status and performance of the employee.
